How many of you have already made an appointment for a whole house generator quote?

Two issues with these quiet box setups:

1. What a PITA to change the oil. How does that guy from the video even get his generator out without disassembling the whole setup?

2. With the move to mandatory CO detectors, I wonder if this is even still feasible.

I have a different model, draining the oil is easy and oil inlet is on the front so doesn't seem so bad.

What's this about CO detectors? This is outside so I wouldn't think that's an issue and it will vent out of the box. I plan to build something very similar, but with baffels on the air in/out to also help with noise.

I get they look better and are quieter, but seems like a lot of work for something you'll be using for a couple days a year max

no doubt. this is a ghetto generac conversion basically.

I would rather just drag my generator over to the panel when I need it.

Oil changes in those aren't that hard.

Most have the exhaust ported outside of the box. Coupled with adequate airflow, with a good fan and inlet, it shouldn't be an issue.

For many, doing something like that is a fun project to work on.

And they probably look at it as having 2 options:

1. Spend time and money doing this, or
2. Spend time and money doing something dumb their wife wants them to do

Might as well choose the fun project.

1. Some have sheds setup that are simpler than others.

Generator Shed

2. There are solutions to this, just look it up on google or youtube

Thank goodness that's money not coming out of my blue jeans. Yea the standby generator prices, have gone through the roof lately.

My whole hood must be generator projecting through the roof because HOA has sent out multiple "reminders" to all the guidelines, permits and the architectural committee rules about generators…

What kind of rules could they have? They're usually behind the house and hidden, so unless they're running, the HOA would never know.

Friend of mine lives in the memorial villages. House is probably 4500 sqft. Gas stove, heater, water heater, small pool. 4 ton, 2 ton and 2 ton A/C.

They tried to tell him he was going to need a 400A system.

My guess he will need a system between 25000-32000 kw for his needs. But hell, he can afford it where he is living.

Maybe if he wants whole house. But I have a 20kw managed system that would run his house just fine.

He just can't run all the A/C units, oven, dishwasher, dryer, microwave, vacuum, hair dryer, pool equipment, and all the lights at the same time.

Usually it's about placement. Not in the utility easement and so far from the property line. Otherwise neighbors call and complain when it's running right by their master bedroom window. Same thing applies for pool pumps.
