The Carnival Liberty decided to gun it to the other side of the Yucatan and they apparently made it.

There is a difference between being knowledgeable and providing information and straight up getting excited and a hard on over something of this nature. Some of these folks are definitely in the latter category.

The histrionics are absolutely insane. 100% carnival knew they could make it barring any major mechanical problems, and those are extreme outliers. They certainly have an entire department monitoring ex and routing ships as necessary, not to mention all of the knowledge on the ship.

eh, I imagine Carnival's command center is quite large. They could easily calculate a route around the hurricane. But it makes for good twitter clicks.

Shiner Brewery Donates to Hurricane Helene Relief Efforts

Quote:

The Spoetzl Brewery in Shiner, Texas, renowned for its iconic Shiner Bock, announced today a $250,000 donation to the American Red Cross to support relief efforts following the catastrophic impacts of Hurricane Helene.

If anyone knows someone at Shiner, you should educate them on the absolute waste of money this was. That's a shame.

But if they do have a breakdown and get stranded, like the one in the news ten years ago or whenever it was, those people are in trouble.

I know it's rare, but the risk is greater than zero.

That's what I was thinking. People went crazy about the dude with his dog getting saved. How often do they throttle at 100% across the gulf? I have no clue. But I bet the seas were pretty rough.

That money will wind up as cash in a crate somewhere in Africa.
Yep.

The only thing I'd give the Red Cross is double rods.
This.

Out of that $250k, maybe $25k will be used for actual relief. The rest goes to overhead, management pay, vacations, pensions, etc.
I don't know anything about the Red Cross, but I thought Charity Navigator was a pretty reliable source of info and their data doesn't back up what y'all are saying. Is Charity Navigator bunk?

IIRC, the ire directed at the Red Cross was not necessarily their overhead, but during one of the large disaster events a while ago (Harvey maybe?), they were taking donations in the name of that event, but then using the money elsewhere for other things while there were still lots of people in need. They got busted on it and were pretty unrepentant IIRC.

Did that for Ike as well in Friendswood. Barely saw a car on the road the next day headed to College Station. I'd ride out Ike again, but I'd be gone for anything bigger.

I can see how that would be frustrating but I also know nothing about how best to deploy donations for emergencies. I'd sort of hope they are experts in that but who knows.

Then again if we were all just trying to make our donations do the most good I think most funds would be directed outside the USA. It's much cheaper to save lives in undeveloped countries.

Sorry to derail. Hope Milton somehow doesn't destroy FL but it's looking pretty dicey.

I was not talking about what one guy on Texags was mad about, I was talking about the change in public sentiment that caused the Red Cross to fall out of favor somewhat in the last few years as a place to donate for disaster relief.

I really don't remember the details and don't care enough to go dig them up, but I think it was something where they were accepting donations through a bunch of regional affiliates and those affiliates were basically putting the money in their local accounts and hanging on to it for future needs in their area, instead of sending it for use in the disaster that everybody was donating money to help. I kind of recall that they have changed some of their donation capabilities to allow you to earmark it for a specific disaster, and if you don't, they reserve the right to use it as they see fit. I tend to look for more localized groups to donate to these days because they are more likely to get the money where it is needed most.

Agree with this. It's not worth getting out on the road and getting stuck somewhere with all the other traffic. Plus I don't want to leave my house for too long after the storm in case I need to repair something. Then you have the looters that certainly were on the lookout for empty houses after Harvey.

My problem is we live in a neighborhood covered in 40+ year old super tall trees. It was bad enough with the cat 1 we went through, and I would do it again, maybe even a cat 2, but any higher than that, there just is no safe place in our home from falling trees that big.

Yep.

That and the fact that even without power, I'd rather be in my house than stuck on a road somewhere or similar. I have a generator that can run 95% of my house, I'll have plenty of food, guns and ammo.

But if a Cat 3 or bigger is coming along the same path as Beryl - wife and kids are heading to her sister's house and I'll decide what to do at the last minute.
