Just got an update from the ren fest friend coworker at lunch. The long and short of it is that the owner has a habit of getting into contracts to sell something and then back out as he still wants control more than the money. Greek food vendor family who has a long standing food agreement with the owner offered to buy or at least lead a group to buy the whole fair from him. Signed contract, owner just stopped responding.
Owner is very old and has Alzheimer's. Also has a penchant for firing staff almost yearly. Big issue is that the jury awarded $20 million to the future buyers in penalties to cover court costs and delays.
General thought is that the extra $20 million hit will cause this whole thing to stay in appeals for a very very long time, with each day this guy's memory is failing. Eventually there will be a point where the owner cannot represent himself in contracts. He has no children.
Best case is someone can convince the owner to settle, sell, and generally have the right to visit year round for the rest of his days. Worst case is this guy dies, contested will, this whole thing takes 10 years to solve.
