The Taco Cabana on Texas in College Station was a Two Pesos for a bit.

Other mall-only staples were Corn Dog 7 and Orange Julius. Both strong.

Spent plenty of time in Sharpstown, then Westwood Malls back in the 70s and 80s. They were the places to be then. What killed them (along with what killed many malls in general) in a big part is the death of Bob Smith, who owned a sizable chunk of West Harris County as the Harris Ranch. When he died, the kids sold off the ranch and apartments cropped up all over the Bissonnett to Bellaire corridor from Gessner to Hwy 6. It began the crawl downhill for Alief and Sharpstown from two of the best neighborhoods in Houston to two of the worst.
Not sure if they're related by the country was in a few recessions in the 70s & early 80s so lots of ****ty living space was built around then.

The fed interest rate was well above 10% for much of that time.

Monterey house had its own chip and tortilla factory. Used real cheese. Hot sauce solid. Had those pralines.

Somehow goes out of business in the late 80s.

Los Tios with their cheese puff lives on but Monterey house might have been better.
Monterey House didn't go fully out of business, there are still a few around and most turned into Tortugas.

That placed was packed after hours when I was there so I was surprised when I saw it closed. I guess Fuegos put them to pasture.

I'm talking about a short time during the late '80s / early '90s. I worked down the block at Bombay Bicycle Club. We had kind of an arrangement with Two Pesos for free margaritas and tacos after work, in exchange for free beers at our bar.

Yep. A lot of "first month free" apartment complexes in Alief at the time of the oil bust, so people moved frequently to cash in.

Had a relative who worked in an Alief school. Back then school records were transferred physically via interoffice mail. Kids would show up to register at a school and the clerk would have to retrace their living arrangements for the last six months because the records would be two or three schools behind.

A few mentions of First Colony- this week I went there for the first time in serveral years and was surprised how much the store selection has declined.
I was at First Colony Mall around Christmas time a few years ago. It was clear mall management and many of the stores were trying their best to ignore the holiday.

I don't know if it was a cost thing, or an attempt to not offend the local demographic. But it was incredibly sad. I used to love the mall around Christmas.

I used barter food when I was a teenage fast food worker and Subway was prime product.

Two Pesos on University was awesome. They were basically a Taco Cabana with pool tables and a jukebox upstairs. Used to do $0.99 margaritas and 2 tacos for $0.99 on weeknights. We could go over there after tutoring geology 101 students on Tuesday and Thursday nights and drink a couple of margaritas, eat dinner, and play pool for a couple of hours for about $5.

We gone from Corn Dog 7 to Chicken Salad Chick.

Put a Corn Dog 7 next to a Chicken salad chick and see who in business 3-years later.

I notice nobody has any experience/ stories about Greenspoint Mall
My brother and his wife moved into a complex about a half a mile from Greenspoint Mall in 1980, first day she goes to work at EXXON some black dude runs from behind a dumpster and jerks off on her windshield, she was not able to give a facial description of the perp.

They are all dead.

Tearing down Greenspoint for low income housing. Not sure that will help the reputation.

That structure they show is already there.

I can it from the beltway when passing it. Unless they are doing to demo it more and build more.

i didn't see any mention of actually tearing greenspoint down. Man, that area will probably get even worse if it doesn't get torn down.

It was always a Taco Cabana. It was a big deal when it opened up in 89 I think.

The Two Pesos was on University around Northgate.
