We've been friends with Earnest Crownover this year and he reached out to us needing some advice as he starts his business career with Frost Bank. This is the message we received from Earnest.

As you know, I'm moving to Houston to start my banking job next month. I wanted to reach out to ask if you knew anyone that may have any guest homes or rental properties out there?

I'll be working downtown near the Galleria. I've been looking at apartments but a lot of them are almost $1500 for one bedroom apartment and that's kind of expensive for me so i just wanted to ask!

Please DM me if you have any leads and I will send you Earnest's number. Thanks!

Does Howdy Club or any other group offer any kind of roommate networking or referrals?

That would be a handy service. I think for most people, the process of looking for a roommate after college involves asking around, talking about locations, and eventually sucking it up and going solo on a less-than-ideal location.

$1500 or more is normal for a true 1-bedroom inside the loop. He might try looking for a garage apartment in the Heights. A lot of homeowners go old school and list them on sites like Cragslist.

This should show search results within 2 miles of 77008 that are a 1/1 for $1250 or less:

Condos on Bering. Find a realtor or someone that helps with that.

Check the HAR website for rentals.

www.har.com

Won't cost him a dime to use a realtor that does leases for this.

That was my first thought. Which one is it? Makes a big difference.

Come on - lots of out of towners/suburbanites refer to anything inner loop (or close) as "downtown." Seems pretty clear he means galleria area for work. Either way, both are close enough it shouldn't matter too much.

When there is a lot of traffic it does make a difference

I lived in the galleria area and went to school downtown my first year in Houston. Wasn't a big deal at all. Hell, Katy/Woodlands/Pearland/Kingwood/Sugar Land to downtown is only 20 minutes.

The Village at Bellaire apartments have a listing for $1,136 a month, but I'm sure there are add on charges.

This was my first apartment complex in the loop.. were they crappy? yes. Were they cheap and in a highly convenient location? also yes.

I haven't lived there in many years but they were constantly trying to do updates that meant increasing rent without actually making the apartments nicer.

Thanks for all these suggestions. I'll pass them along to Earnest. I'm not exactly sure which Frost location he is at. He just mentioned the Galleria area was where he was looking I believe.

I work downtown and don't mind a roommate for a year to save money towards a down payment on a home if he wants to go that route

Traffic has improved! It used to be 30 minutes from Kingwood to downtown.

Well yeah...They stopped building new homes out there and they widened 59 so traffic flows uninhibited all the time.

I honestly don't remember what I paid but I think it was like 900 or something? It was a perfectly fine, safe, convenient place to live.

I rent a house now, 1600 sq ft for less than 1500,,, but don't ask what my electric bill was cause the house was built in 1920.

The next year when my roommate got married I moved to off Westheimer just past the Beltway. 1 BR/1BA was $225/month.

My son lives south of the Central Market on Westhiemer and pays about $1300/month, there are some but not all utilities included. It's a 1 bedroom so he's not looking for a roommate other than his girlfriend who graduates in December. They have both decided to move to Ft Worth when the lease is up.
