Can anyone recommend a mental health counselor that is good with teenagers, preferably in SW Houston area? Issues like self-esteem, depression, self-worth, sense of purpose, etc.

Would prefer in person, but telehealth may also be OK. TIA

No experience, but I've heard good things about Tarnow Center on the West Loop.

Male or female? I feel like that makes a big difference.

The teen is male. I feel like a male counselor would be best / easiest to talk to, but don't really know.

My cousin (F) and BIL (M) both went through Menninger at different stints. Best of luck.

Dr. Tarnow is really good and has been at it for a looong time. I would start here. He's a psychiatrist but has therapists that work in his office.

1. It will likely take a while to get in anywhere that you would want to go. Start now.
2. You will likely be paying cash out of pocket for anyone that is worth a crap. It will be money well spent.
3. The likely course of treatment is a combination of medication and therapy.

Just seeing the OP makes me sad. I wish I had a recommendation for you. I pray you find someone to help your son. It'll be a long road, but glad you're taking it seriously.

Another option to look at if you need one:
Ethos Wellness Outpatient Services for Therapy and Psychotherapy

I have not used them personally, but Dr. Ceci Hudson Torn is COO of this group and I know her (as I'm sure others do too). Incredibly nice person and comes from an Aggie family.

I've found it's nearly impossible to find anyone taking in person and even more so after school hours. And don't even think about using insurance.

No direct answer to the OP. But I say that the things that got me through depression as a teenager (and later) were Jesus, quality (not quantity or sketchy) friends and the outdoors. Jesus for purpose for my life, quality friends to keep you grounded, and the outdoors to keep perspective. I can't imagine having to navigate life as a teen these days with social media influences, devices, etc. being what they are. I've got a few years before my kids are there. Best of luck OP.
