I am looking for recommendations for a good cardio Dr in the Houston area.

Just a high-level history: being treated for cancer but now paused due to heart issue... possible coronary artery disease, not severe.

Memorial?
Houston Methodist?

And I've seen The Texas Heart Institute mentioned before as well.

The team at the Memorial Hermann Center for Advanced Heart Failure is great. I should have been dead years ago. Don't let the name fool you, they do all sorts of cardiology, not just advanced stuff. My wife goes there for high blood pressure and monitoring. Dr Kar and Dr Jumean and top notch. Located in Med Center.

PS I hope you kick the cancer in the dick.

I go to Texas Heart Institute. They have truly world class heart doctors.

The head of Houston Methodist cardio is a good friend. It's a great outfit. My wife is a patient so I'm followed this for many years.

Thanks for the recommendations.

Pardon me if this a dumb question, but here goes. At this point I don't know what treatment will be necessary, maybe just medication, maybe surgery, who knows! I think i have some type of coronary artery disease.

So I am wondering, do I try to go with a "regular" cardiologist as opposed to an interventional cardiologist.

If you don't know, just pick one and go get checked out.

This is why I prefer Dr Duchman. I have a family member who went to see him. Determined he needed stints. When Dr Duchman went in to do them, he realized my family member needed bypasses. Since he was at Methodist already, he was prepped and had an amazing heart surgeon who did the bypass surgery.

If you do choose someone on your own through a rec, then they may recommend someone else, if needed.

You could also call any location and ask for a recommendation based in your history and current condition.

another big plus for Dr Duchmann. Best in he state. Been going to him for about 15 yrs and ;he is very caring and will take time to talk to you more than most doctors. In fact he just called me this morning after installing a chip in my heart yesterday for a fib just as a followup on his own . Very dedicated and Christian man. Willowbrook Cardiologists 281-890-4848

My personal opinion and that of a lot of my Doc friends is to go with someone associated with Methodist Hospital. I've had a great experience to date with Methodist - of course all my docs are Methodist so it makes it really easy. I use Dr. Raizner who is a legend among Houston cardiologist and the doc the doctor's use. But I think he will retire within a year. His son is also part of the practice and actually did my Angiogram last week, which thankfully showed no blockage.

Although honestly, if you go to one off the Big 3 - Methodist/Debakey, St Luke's/Texas Heart Institute, Memorial Hermann you should get good care.

Thanks for all the suggestions. Seems like most of these drs all associate with (but not employed by) Houston Methodist and/or Memorial Hermann.

Most of the good Drs don't have any available openings until September, but was able to talk to the admin at Dr. Duchman's office (Willowbrook Cardiovascular Associates) and she originally said no openings until Sept 5th. When I brought up being treated by MD Anderson and "feeling desperate" she put me on hold and came back with an appointment next week. Phew! I was starting to stress which is the LAST thing I want to do these days!

Just something to think about, having had cancer, you may have a unique set or circumstances. I have heart issues as a long term side effect from chemo, I go to a cardiologist at MD Anderson who specializes in heart conditions as a result of cancer treatment.

Right, Crazy, that has been part of my thought process over the last couple of weeks, I kept going back and forth.. but in the end, my MDA cancer doctor literally said to me "our cardio doctors here are good, but do you have a cardiologist, if not, can you get one?" I think he was a little embarrassed because MDA's cardio dept had not yet gotten back to me to discuss the MDA stress test/image results.

My MDA cardio Dr and his team have been the one and only thing I have been disappointed with at MDA. Other than that, it has been world class to me.

I'll see how the visit goes Friday with Dr. Duchman and who knows, he may recommend MDA or at least "partner" with them in my treatment.

can y'all think of any questions I should ask?

I'm going to ask if this issue could have been caused by or worsened by my cancer treatment (the last 3 years - non-chemo targeted therapy). I have been off the treatment now for about 3 weeks, which makes me feel a tad uneasy for sure! :-)

I know I've had high blood pressure and high cholesterol for years and ignored it. I did begin blood pressure meds 3 years ago along with my cancer treatment. I always blamed my BP pressure on white-coat syndrome, which I definitely do have.

And will ask him if he would partner with my MDA cancer Dr (and/or MDA cardiologist) after this issue is hopefully fixed up.

they will screen you & ask a lot of questions. I would try to think of questions as it relates to your treatments.

If you want a second opinion...My brother is an interventional cardiologist at major practice in North Texas. They often have patients ask them for referrals for famliy members in Houston. They always send people to Dr. George Basu. He's a stud. I'm mid 40's and have a family history of some genetic conditons affecting the heart. I see Dr. Basu 2x a year for a checkup/testing.

Had my appt with Dr. Duchman on Friday morning and he reviewed my notes/results from my MDA stress test.
For now he has me taking a daily baby aspirin and asked his admin to set up a heart CT scan.
That was 8:30am Friday. Still no CT scheduled. I have called and spoken to the admin who says so-and-so will be calling you to schedule. Nothing. I called back and she transferred me to Perla the scheduler, nobody answered and it went to v/m. I emailed them back and explained AGAIN that I am being treated for a nasty incurable cancer, in remission, but have my treatment with MDA on pause until my heart issue is fixed.
I was able to find Dr. Duchman's email so I emailed him early this morning.

MDA has followed up with me asking if I have gotten a CT scheduled, so this morning I asked MDA how urgent is it that I get this going... do I have a couple days/weeks to play with? I have been off of my cancer treatment about 3 weeks and it gets a little nerve-racking! :-)

Is this pretty par for the course? :-/

Is it a Calcium Scoring CT Scan? If so, Houston Methodist has a self elected scan for $140. No referral needed. Radiologist will review and they deliver to you via MyChart fairly quickly.

Prayers for your fight against cancer.

I have been with the Methodist team since my cardiac issues presented in 2005. Dr. Tapan Rami is my current doctor, he has implanted my last 4 pacemakers and the Watchman device.
