As I understand, a lot of attorneys in the Lege get cushy "of Counsel" jobs at big law firms because any case where a legislator is the attorney of record gets an automatic stay during the legislative session.

True. I know of one who got dumped by the firm as soon as he was out of the leg.

Never really looked at Whitmire's practice, though I think he did get some grief way back for being of counsel to a state agency.

And then there all those legislators, even some without law degrees, who had gigs with Linebarger when they were expanding their government collections areas.
