Is the area to the north and west of the Galleria still popular for singles to live at? I lived there for years back in the 90's and 2000s...so many friends lived nearby bounded by Westheimer, Woodway, Voss and Post Oak. This was in the days before Midtown really took off.

In short, unless you are a multi-millionaire and can afford a seven-figure, gated home, ITL Houston has become a terrible place to live.

No way I'd mess around with any kind of apartment complex. You better off focusing your efforts on a private residence with a freestanding guest house, garage apartment, pool house, carriage house or whatever. Preferably where you can park behind a gate.

Driving around looking for "for rent" signs is an underrated suggestion.

Figure out what part of town you want to be in when you factor cost.

And send me a pic if you want to crash on my face.

The year is 2034. The OP smiles as he ruminates on the Clear Lake area apartment he settled on in 2024. After proposing to that UHCL grad teaching at Barbers Hill ISD, he was persuaded to buy a townhouse in Porter where newlyweds are congregating to quickly. She was fun back in 2026 but now it's time to spread roots like a mighty oak. Yep that AI pregnancy test is right, I need to move my potential brood out where we can live, he thinks. Young families need space. So they pack up and move to raise kids in Columbus. There's a new tiny home community that's all the rage with his wife's vapid social media circle. Oh how the kids took to the virtual pickleball leagues every year. They are getting so big, but it's time to move again. This time, they'll move further west to where families really thrive, he remembers. After all the twists and turns in life, he sure is glad 2035 is right around the corner and they are all in the place they were meant to be in: El Paso.

Some really solid advice here. Heights is where I would be in your shoes. Stay inside the loop and west of 45. Have fun - you'll love the convenience and the social side of the city. So many food and hang out options.

So you are essentially free to live anywhere between New Orleans and Brownsville, and you pick Houston? You don't have to live in the middle of a sales territory to be effective. Where's your concentration of customers?

That's the kicker, a lot of our business is focused around the Houston area, not as much in SA or Austin, otherwise I'd be looking out there.

My manager said that I am of course free to live anywhere I want, but he recommended that I be in the Houston area for my first few years so that I won't have to travel overnight as much. I'll still be spending a good amount of time in hotel rooms, but not as much as I would be if I lived hours away from Houston.

On second thought, we are making this way too easy for him.

I want to see some struggle. Move to the Golden Triangle and blog about how your night life revolves around banging Hooters waitresses who failed out of Lamar and are taking classes at a community college in Port Arthur.

Ha!

Enjoy life and your commute to the Katy Prairie. We'll suffer our way through life ITL. Living on the mean streets of River Oaks, West U and Southampton, etc.

OP - live inside the loop - enjoy the city

Exactly.

I've lived inside the loop for 11 years, both renting apartments from homeowners, and purchased my own condo 5 years ago. I live extremely comfortably with plenty of disposable income and am only in the top 14th percentile or so, as far as household income is factored in Houston. I'm a single income with both a mortgage for condo off Washington and a new car.

The only crime I have experienced in 11 years of living inside the loop is having my car window smashed near Westheimer when I made the mistake of leaving my laptop in the backseat 10 years ago. I also had my window smashed when I parked in a shady area in Midtown, during a night barhopping about 10 years ago.

If you can find a garage apartment, carriage house, or something like that, you are generally parking in a neighborhood. I lived in a situation like that for 5 years and never had my car broken into.

Agree with stay ITL. $1300 is tough for an apartment in a building, but Montrose/heights garage apartments can be in that range. Access to i10 to Louisiana makes the Heights a winner for your territory.

For $1,300 you could get a nice room at a house in The Woodlands with a couple "on the DL".

Serious post for the OP - garage apartments in the Heights are good options. A lot of the older owners still use sites like Craigslist to advertise rentals, but driving through the neighborhood will help you find places that aren't actually advertised anywhere.

You can also try sending an email to mike [at] harvardheights [dot] com He builds garage apartments and sometimes keeps tabs on which of his clients are looking for tenants/.

Do yourself a favor and live in either Waller, Brazoria, Galveston, or Montgomery County. It will save you money and headache from living in the City.

I love Houston, actually.

It's a disgrace what decades of liberal Democrat politicians in positions of power has done. That has been recently accelerated by Defund Dina, Rodney Ellis and Sly Turner, et al.

To me, it's not worth living in an area where heinous crime is rampant and tolerated. And, I cannot yet afford to live in the communities ITL in a manner where I'd feel safe.

The Heights is easily the answer for OP. But, prepare to have your vehicle broken into.
