I had no idea this many people listened to that station. I thought it was just my dad and the other old timers going for coffee at 0530.

I find it odd that with as long as she's been with the station and her rapport with the whole team there that she would be subject to a reorg. Gotta be more to it. Especially with the abrupt exit. Definitely will miss hearing her in the mornings!
I've never worked for a company who wouldn't spite itself to save a buck. I'm assuming she was making more than Jimmy, but even then I would have kept her out of the two. I wonder if they're going to bring in some cheap 20-somethings to pick up the slack.

Looking at the class years posting about this, it seems like it is the old timers listening

Some of us have to be at work by 6am...

And it's a great resource for news.

I do go in early! Guess what, the other stations don't wait on the sunrise to turn on. It's not 1974 anymore where the national anthem plays at 0700 and then they start playing.

Not knocking 740, just really didn't realize their popularity. Maybe I need to give it a chance. My hair is going gray now, so maybe it is time to accept my fate.

Wasn't a slight, just stating that their audience is more than retirees.

I listen to 740AM in the truck and the office, but I turn it off during Hannity. I can't stand his radio show.

I doubt it. Probably made decent $$ for what she did and had a job that was easily seen as dispensable, in an industry that's having to increasingly compete for listening ears with satellite radio, streaming services and podcasts.

I switch between 740, and 790 every morning. Talk radio IMO is more peaceful for my drive in at 5:30 am. I dont want to hear crappy music and crappy jokes and game shows on FM radio when I'm tired and not wanting to go to work. I have no reason to be excited like FM dj's are pretending to be.

All radio networks are facing new rounds of cuts.

I honestly didn't realize KTRH still had a local news crew. I've tried checking the station during the day a couple of times after or before storms while driving, and they had nothing but syndicated talk.

They bookend the syndicated shows with local programing during the rush hours.

740 KTRH in the morning on the way to work.

950 KPRC in the evening going back home.

They also cut Levin in the evenings several weeks back. It sounds like they are trying to make some cuts to survive.

It's the media way now: Do more with less. Save money by cutting as much as you can. Young and cheap. The product suffers, but as long as money is being made, it doesn't matter.

It's not just radio. It's all local media. The ears and eyeballs aren't there like they used to be due to streaming and all other options. Listeners and viewers don't wait for the news anymore. They want it on demand, on the web or social media.

Overall, it's the listeners and viewers who lose. The depth of reporting, in many cases, is gone. The additional context to help listeners understand why they should care, is gone.

Been listening to KTRH since the days of Bill Zak and Dewy Compton in the mornings. I listen all day up till Hannity, cannot stand him. I go to KPRC 950 finish the day with Jesse Kelly.

you're last sentence is the entire problem with "news" these days. I don't need "help" to "understand why" I "should care".

I just want the news, not media driven opinion pieces.

Yeah, I listen to the morning show typically because it's just on when I first get in the truck. It has good news headlines usually. I'm a daily listener of Michael Berry and enjoy his show (minus the "back in my day" segments or when he gets way too into music history). Clay and Buck do a decent job in Rush's spot and Hannity is absolutely a no go for me.

Yes and no. Agenda-driven "news" has definitely been a growing problem over the past several decades. I wish it would die. But reporting that goes the extra mile to present BOTH sides of issues, especially local issues or those that may be flying under the radar and need a spotlight, is invaluable resource that also suffers under the new cheaper/no experience required model. I like Grizzy and she serves an important role. But so does a Wayne D and a Dave Ward, etc.

And yet the most popular "news" shows on tv and radio are nothing but opinion shows with an occasional guest that have minimal factual reporting.

really hard to fill the airwaves with straight news and no opinions. Would also be incredibly boring.

If you believe in this strongly, you can likely buy an AM radio license on the cheap

I think you are missing the point of my comment. My reference was for local media. Also, you likely are not the standard listener/viewer.

Only high-level details are given on community, tax or governmental-related issues, and there is no depth to the reporting. Many viewers/listeners don't understand, and inexperience in reporting misses important context.

I gave it an honest shot this morning. I can confidently say that it isn't my thing. The other thing is holy commercial breaks! One clocked in at 7 minutes. I normally would have switched channels, but I wanted to see how far it would go. Y'all enjoy, I'm out on this.

The commercials do suck. Definitely way too many. But I like W&J. Been listening for a long time. Kenny has done a decent job in Walton's place after he died.

Mr. Kenneth is voice by Steve and does not have his own show in the afternoon. That's Kenny Webster.

It took me a bit to figure out if I liked Kenny or not, but I've come around on him.
