It's that time of year again. Places 5, 6, and 7, are up this cycle.

Place 5 candidates: Diana Martinez Alexander and Jennifer Hyland

If you have followed any local politics in the past few years, you might have heard of Alexander. She has run for various offices over the last few cycles, the last time being against Wesley Hunt. Her own website describes her as a "passionate educator, activist, organizer and voice for my community." She is a certifiably insane person and belongs nowhere near elected office; certainly not a school board.

I have no idea who Jennifer Hyland is. EDIT: Hyland's Facebook page indicates she is a republican who supported John Perez in his state house run, posts scripture, and send her kids to Pine Cove.

Place 6 candidates: J. Steven Smelley, David Enrique Lopez, and Walker Agnew.

Walker Agnew is a Wilchester Elementary dad who lives in Wilchester West and is a nat gas scheduler with Kinder Morgan. He grew up in SBISD, went to Stratford, and has young kids in the district. He is a great guy and would make an awesome board member.

Lopez ran last cycle and was soundly defeated. His LinkedIn profile lists him as a "dedicated educator, community advocate, and civic engagement leader," and comes complete with his pronouns (He/Him). Again, another person that should be nowhere near a school board. Here is a video of Lopez and Alexander (noted above) showing off their nut-job-ness:

I have no information on Smelley.

Place 7 candidates: Juan Jose Reyes, Patricia Cabrera, and Caroline H. Bennett

Bennett is the incumbent and was first elected to the board in 2022 in the conservative wave that swept that cycle. Overall, I have heard positive things about her.

Patricia Cabrera is endorsed by the woman (Virginia Elizondo) who is suing SBISD on the insane basis that the current at-large election system violates the Voting Rights Act. Cabrera's Facebook page notes her support for Beto, Planned Parenthood, AOC, DEI, and Hillary Clinton, among others. Not great, Bob.

I have no information on Reyes.

Election day is Saturday May 3rd. If you don't want crazy people running the SBISD board, please tell your neighbors and get involved.

Jennifer Hyland is a great candidate!! Strong conservative, attended SBISD schools herself, sent all her kids to SBISD schools and still has a daughter in SBISD high school. She has advocated for improved reading and education for us at the State level as well.
Best candidate running for her position!!

I am voting for Hyland, Agnew.
Hyland is a passionate literacy advocate, recognized both locally and at the state level. If you have a child with dyslexia or concerns about literacy, she is the person you want on the board. She is dedicated, knowledgeable, and will be a tremendous asset to the district.

With John Perez's term expiring, I am incredibly sad to see him go- he was the real deal, steadfast in his convictions, and a true advocate for our schools. I only wish he were our State Rep-we lost there too.

I know Walker personally. Volunteers at church every week and is a solid human being. He is 100% the right person for a spot on the board.

Isn't an upgrade for Reggie Grob stadium on the ballot? I live right next to there and I think I've only seen it used twice in the 15+ years I've been here. I doubt I'll be voting for that measure.

I don't live in the district, but driving in the Wilchester area I'm seeing a lot more Reyes signs then Bennett. The other two are well represented.

Reyes headed the Nottingham HOA for a long time and is known in the neighborhood. My guess is what you are seeing is localized to Nottingham and maybe Nottingham West.....just based on my drive-by assessment.

Word directly from a school board member is that this will be appealed to the 5th Circuit and they like their chances there.

That's big news. Kind of crazy to think that if the SBISD loses and those activists achieve their goal of taking over the island in the middle of the HISD catastrophe, the cascade of consequences that would result. First would be inevitable worsening of the schools, affecting both the "rich" and the "poor". If that happens, the people that currently pay a premium to live near the desirable schools are the same people that will move fast to switch to private schools. That creates a negative feedback loop in public schools. The economic loses from homes no longer being zoned to a competent school could touch $1 billion. (Based on an estimate of a $50B in property valuations for all properties in the SBISD.)
AggieMom24

Yup, think of the people you dont want to win this year possibly coming to a school board in the near future. No doubt, they will be the ones running in "their" districts, selectively drawn for them.

Perhaps that's why they want to upgrade it? So they can play varsity football games there as well as Tully.
