Anyone have a local farm somewhere near Houston that sells grass fed, pasture raised beef, chicken, and pork that they really like? We tried Butcher Box but weren't a fan and would love to buy local. They don't have to deliver - happy to go there if it's good. Thanks

I've bought pig fat from Frydek farms, but I've never bought meat. If they go to a farmers market near you, you call in your order and then pick up at the farmers market.

I searched TexAgs for previous threads and recently placed an order with Field to Family in College Station. They worked with me to create a custom "box" and everything we've had so far has been really good. To the point that we will absolutely be repeat customers.

They don't do pork or chicken, though. So following this thread as I'd like to find a local source as well.

They're finished on grain but Thomas has quality meat.

There is a group on facebook called Shop Texas Farms that is exactly what you are looking for. Several around the Houston area, depends on what side of town you are on.

BTW, grass fed beef is turrble. Grain finished is the way to go.

Would like to buy more meat from places like you're looking for, but it definitely comes at a premium.

What part of Houston? I recently started buying beef from DFT Cattle in Richmond. We signed up for a half beef 12 month subscription, which means after a year we'll have bought half a cow. Really happy with everything we've received so far.

I've never had an issue with HEB grass fed/finished beef. Pricing and taste has always been good for me, but i'm always open to another source if I can save money.

Carvinore diet here, so the difference in Omega 3 to Omega 6 between grass fed and grain is something that's important to me. For the last couple months, I've been buying the grass fed tri-tip at HEB, and it's been delicious. Bake until 80 degrees in center, then sear in cast iron, then finish in oven to 130 internal. So freaking tasty.

Good luck finding a quality source. Just because the package at the store says 'grass feed/finished' does not speak to the quality of the meat. I've started an operation near Caldwell. All natural starts with the grass the cows eat. No fertilizer and no weed spray. I'm about two years out on meat production. I'll be selling steers at castration at down to a 1/6 interest. Issue with grass finished is time - it takes almost two years. I'm looking for some yearling steers to finish in a year. My first calf crop will be late Aug early Sept. I'll be adding some goats to follow the cows in rotational grazing. So if your looking for lamps chops also I hope to have those next fall. Nothing for sale now but I've started it because so many friends have issues or are looking for a food source they can come see. It costly but I feel there are many people willing to pay a premium for top quality where they can see the inputs and actually know what they are eating.

I can understand the no pesticides, but the no fertilizer is kinda strange to me. You must have a lot of land to cow ratio to keep grass growing at a rate cattle can graze on it.

You might consider Cat Spring Beef over in Austin County.

First, I'm not saying your way is wrong.

The fertilizer I'm referring to are synthetic fertilizers. I fertilizer my land by natural fertilizers (cow patties) and adding organic inputs as spreading hay to feed in the winter and planting forage that add nutrients to the soil.

I believe that it is a very simple but often over looked biochemistry issue. The meat that you eat is the grass that you grow.

The cattle industry has become very focused on economics and is very commercial - growing 1500 lb steers finished on grain in a year. I understand the economics but what I'm trying to do is get back to an all grass feed beef. If you understand their digestive system that is what they were intended to do. I raise a fairly new breed (Southpoll) which is designed to be a grass only cow.

I don't know that you can do what I'm trying to do on a large scale but I do believe that I'll get premium premium prices for what I produce (back to the original post).

I believe that you also need plant diversity (what most of us call weeds). When I was shopping for a place I always wanted that pretty pristine coastal Bermuda pasture but I've come to believe that you can add nutrients and mineral to the meat by having a rich healthy soil that leads to plant diversity.

My simple approach is if you want heathy beef you need healthy soil.

Ordering from them for last 10+ years. In Harris County out by Crosby. Beef/chicken/pork. Can purchase at a few farmers markets around town.

Makes sense. Nothing wrong with whatever approach you choose.

I don't raise cows so I have no dog in the fight. In fact, if cows didn't taste so good (grass fed, grain finished though) I'd just as soon see them eradicated from the planet because they are big dumb *******s that tear up anything and everything they touch and sht everywhere.

I get adding organics to the soil, but the fertilizer thing....all nature does is break everything down to the elements that are used. Nitrogen is nitrogen whether it is out of a bag or created through weeks of decomposition of a pile of cow crap. The grass/weeds don't know the difference.

But, you doing your thing is what you want to do and makes you happy. And plenty of people will gladly pay a premium for it, so more power to you.

Curious why you didn't like BB? I've been a customer for a long time and have noticed the quality of their cuts decline a little as they battle inflation.

Not the OP, but I've tried all the big names in that business model (Butcher Box, Crowd Cow, Porter Road, etc.). I just didn't think the quality was worth the price. I can get better steaks at HEB for cheaper.

With Butcher Box I also had issues with how they packaged the shipments. I had several vacuum sealed packages that were in direct contact with dry ice so had holes in them. They had a really good sale a couple years later so gave them another shot and didn't think the quality was worth it, even at the sale price. And I think since they've gone to a subscription plan which I have no interest in.

I tried a local place (in my post above) and it's cheaper than those options and significantly better.

No question about price/value. I've stuck it out because as an early subscriber, I get several cuts free each month, so in my mind it evens out (probably doesn't but ...).

We've never really had any issue with packaging -- even in summer -- but I know a lot of people do.

I still buy some meat from HEB and probably would cancel ButcherBox altogether if quality continues to decline.
