So not only are they serving Tex-Mex that is at best average they are now charging for chips and salsa. That seems like a good way to go out of business.

I love how they claim most other Tex Mex restaurants are charging $7-10 for chips.

They should do like restaurants and bars in Spain do with olives. Put it on the table regardless and if anyone eats any, charge em.

In response to the April 13 complaint about the Greater Heights location, she said the restaurant only charges when customers abuse the free chips and salsa policy.

Canadians? Do they also order water with 15 lemons?

When I asked Horowitz if free chips and salsa were disappearing, he said it wouldn't be surprising, especially given the economy that restaurants currently find themselves in. "I was just in Vegas last week and went to a Tex-Mex place where chips and salsa was a menu item (maybe $5 or $6) and we ordered it," he said.

I'm not naive enough to think that "free" chips and salsa aren't priced in but $5 or $6? F' that!

Also, who uses Vegas as an example on how things should be done in Houston!? Vegas is a tourist town that lives by "there's a sucker born every minute."

Vegas has decided that price gouging is their new normal. They make NYC and London seem like a good value comparatively.

This has been beaten to death on the Heights Foodie FB page. SF provided receipts showing that it was an order of mole salsa, not just regular chips and salsa.

"People's mentality needs to change," Ximena said. "I was the kind of person who would go to a steakhouse because they have the best bread. I can't even recall a restaurant that gives bread for free. Masraff's doesn't do it. Steak 48 doesn't do it."

I have literally NEVER been in a place that charged for chips and salsa. At least not that I recall...and pretty sure I would remember that.

But $7-10??? Haha I'm laughing in someone's face and dragging my family out of there.

They used to have the best enchilada plate in town back in the day. Caldo de pollo was money too. But I lived half a block from SF around 2010-2012 and witnessed the decline in real time.

exactly. they're making 1000% margins on margaritas and concerned about penny's spent for chips/salsa?

also understand if they're dealing with a table that splits a fruity cocktail and app and eats 15 baskets of chips. but...that should be worked into the economics as the optics of charging for chips/salsa are much more damaging.

I can count on the fingers of one hand how many times I have been to a Mexican restaurant that charged for chips and salsa, and none of them were in Texas and none of them charged more than $5.

Plenty of restaurants have chips and salsa on the menu as billed items. Mostly places that aren't exclusively Tex-Mex.

It's unbelievable what social media turns into drama.

At SF, they probably get tired of drunks sitting there ordering round after round of "free" appetizers. They are not free to the restaurant.

If they are drinking enough to get drunk, they already made plenty of profit off of them from the overpriced drinks to cover a dozen baskets of chips.

nah...sweet restaurant hack is to get drunk in the parking lot...then go in for the free chips and salsa.

Chuy's used to throw in free queso back in the day. so choice.

Guess I was never that desperate for a snack. Just buy a bag of chips and a bottle of salsa and hang out somewhere not surrounded by a bunch of other drunks if that is your thing.

It's a 24 hour Mexican restaurant on North Main; we were usually pretty ****faced by the time we got there (except for our Designated Driver, of course!).

You made me miss the Berryhill Baja Grill at Buffalo Speedway.

This thread also made me realize that I have incorrectly called the restaurant in the OP "Spanish Flower," singular for years. Guess I was thinking of the aphrodisiac.
