This was a YouTube suggestion for me. Decided to watch it while I ate lunch.

From the commercials to the wide lapels, Jan Carson being on 13 instead Channel 2 (I forgot that), Elmer Wayne Henley, one of Dean Corrl's accomplices, on trial, and the long lines at the gas pumps. As a kid I definitely remember those.

Oh, and a guy in a trailer park that starts shooting, gets taken by the police a couple hours later, and then helps the guy get a cigarette going in the back of a squad car even though he's in handcuffs. And the Channel 13 crew got to be right in the room with the HPD negotiator while they were trying to get this guy to surrender!

Gotta run. Need to go buy some Shell Fire & Ice motor oil in case my massive sedan ever gets frozen in a block of ice.

Ed Brandon confessed to a $1000/day coke habit after he disappeared from the air for a long stretch and then showed back up much heavier.

Said he was snorting in the custodial closet.

Pretty cool to watch, even though I did not live in Houston at the time.

The posting should have been labeled June 4, 1979, though.

The baseball state tournament would not have been going on in July, and the Zarate fight that was referenced happened on June 3.

The school desegregation story showed sentence diagraming on the chalkboard. Damn, did that bring back memories.

Also love the commercials being included. Plop, plop, fizz, fizz...

I laugh because i worked downtown near the old Exxon building and never realized they used to have a gas station in that parking garage.

This was broadcasted 2 years before i was born.

That was good. Remember all of that. Astroworld commercials. Bob Allen, Dave Ward and Ed Brandon - the precursor to Anchorman! Astros in the Dome playing Pete Rose and the Phillies. Promoting Monday Night Baseball which was a big deal at the time. Wendy's commercial with only 2 locations listed!

Yes ... the screen cap appears to be a shot from Willie's Picnic or some other July 4th celebration, but the broadcast is earlier.

The weather satellite photos also have a June 4 time stamp them.

Pre computer graphics weather report. At least he had computer enhanced color radar....I think that appeared a few years earlier.

I don't purport to be educated on the vagaries of a hard-core coke habit but unless you're giving out free toots to everyone who comes along how in the hell can you go through enough cocaine to spend $1000 per day on it in 1979?
