Iconic barbecue chain fires up $6.5M expansion in Texas' biggest city

Quote:

Fresh off earning an honorable mention as one of the state's best barbecue restaurants, and amid rumors of a Tennessee expansion, a famed Texas chain known for its smoked meat and dino ribs is reinvesting in the Lone Star State. Austin's iconic Terry Black's BBQ is now looking toward Southeast Texas with plans for a multimillion-dollar restaurant officially in the works.

Terry Black's BBQ is expanding into Houston with a $6.5 million outpost headed to The Heights, a northwest central part of the city that's remained a cultural hub for decades, according to a filing with the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation.

The 8,300-square-foot Houston smokehouse, located at 1311 N. Shepherd Drive, Houston, TX 77008, is aiming to begin construction on August 1 and is expected to be completed by June 1, 2026, according to the TDLR. All TDLR filings are subject to change without notice.

This has been in the works for some time.

I remember reading about it 3-4 years ago with the address known then.

Glad it's finally happening. Will be a welcome addition.

Super weird that they are building a boutique hotel with it. Trying to figure out who would want to stay there.

Who wouldn't want that excellent view of Tommie Vaughn Ford?

Where did you see that? No mention of it on the permit.

Somebody turned the Astro Inn off 45N into the "Heights House Hotel," so anything is possible.

I think Houston gets more party visitors these days than most of us like to think. Either coming for concerts or to visit friends who transplanted here.

Fantastic to have 3 quality BBQ places in a small radius in addition to Truth and Pinkerton's

Had to wait for all that Shepard construction to be completed.

Are they still open? I never saw them open when I lived up that way a few years ago.

I mean it's not Spring Creek bad, but it doesn't belong in the conversation with the other 3. I don't seek it out, but if I'm in that area around lunchtime I'll go

Somehow I doubt that, unless you just don't eat a lot of bbq. Gatlins biggest problem is consistency. They are all over the place, but when they are "on" they are pretty damn good.

Blacks hasn't even submitted drawings to the city yet, so I highly unlikely they start in August. They might be able to start site work/utilities by then, they have drawings in for that, but it hasn't been approved yet.

Can't see the city holding them up for any reason especially considering the hit that businesses on Shepherd took during the construction.

It just takes time to get your drawings approved for permit, there are always a couple rounds of revisions. It takes months to run through all the departments. The fact that they haven't even submitted for first review yet makes me think they don't even have a complete set ready.

I had Gatlin's once about 6+ years ago. It took about 45 min to get my food out for whatever reason. And I wasnt impressed at all. Haven't been back since

I hear better reviews about their sister restaurant, Fin and Feathers (which i havent been to yet), than I do Gatlin's.

I always found it to be more East Texas style BBQ than the usual Central Texas style. It's certainly not elite BBQ but the smoked chicken, wings, and ribs along with some dirty rice and fried okra are pretty good. Stay away from the brisket and sausage.

This is the chain that is found in Austin? If so, I've never been. Couldn't fit it in when I was last in Austin for a conference. Is it worthy to make the trip into town (live in Katy), once they open?

Sorry for asking a question.

I'm not totally up on the names of Austin-area BBQ chains.
