Ugh, another place for Memorialites and Tanglewoodians in their convertible M3's to slum feed.

Hope it's good enough to draw some of the Boil House clientele to scare off the yuppies.

We actually could use another nice hotel in the heights. The marriotts in Brookhollow are ghetto. The courtyard on i-10 before Yale is good, and thy are opening that boutique hotel on 19 or 20th. But we could use another non hooker hotel in area.

Tend to agree. the Hampton is getting rundown. The HoJo is a ****hole. The courtyard nails people an arm and a leg. I think their avg. nightly rate is $200+ on a weekday.

Can't see the city holding them up for any reason especially considering the hit that businesses on Shepherd took during the construction.
I see you haven't dealt with any municipality, much less COH.

I mean...I do have a retail business in the Heights that was all self GC'd by myself and my business partner. So there's that.

Fantastic to have 3 quality BBQ places in a small radius in addition to Truth and Pinkerton's

Don't forget Gatlins off of Ella

I had Gatlin's once about 6+ years ago. It took about 45 min to get my food out for whatever reason. And I wasnt impressed at all. Haven't been back since

I hear better reviews about their sister restaurant, Fin and Feathers (which i havent been to yet), than I do Gatlin's.
Same....I went to their old location when I drove by and didn't have a crazy line. I ordered w/in 15 minutes, then I waited over an hour to get my food. No idea wtf were they doing back there....

Their current location is a 1/2 mile from my house so I've been twice. Once for dinner w/ family and same, took 30+ minutes to get our food. Decided to try to pick up breakfast tacos once also....those took 20 minutes. So don't plan on going back anytime soon.

The original location was slow as hell, but at least the food was good.

I don't know if he moved to an electric smoker or changed something else when he went to the B&M spot, but I could just never get into the food there. It is a lot faster though.

You never had Tom's on the North Loop and Ella? I see it's a Hungry Farmer now, so may be worth another visit....maybe???

Tom's wasn't good, but still slightly better, imo. Gatlin's sausage looked and tasted like it had been sitting on a gas station roller for about a week. The brisket was bone dry and super bland. The cole slaw was the only thing worth eating.

I had a chance to talk to Daniel Vaughn from Texas Monthly about Gatlin's a while back and this is what he said:
Quote:

We like Gatlin's because of the barbecue and other specialties we've eaten there. I love their smoked wings, smoked chicken, and the mushroom burger. The pork and beef ribs are impressive, especially with a side of dirty rice, and I don't think I've had a better barbecue breakfast sandwich than their brisket biscuit.

Did you have to hire an architect and submit drawings or did you just wahoo it? A ground up restaurant build is a little different. Even if they submitted their drawings today, Id be surprised if they had a permit before the end of the year, just depends on how on the ball their architects are at responding to the review comments.

Yes. We completely gutted a 2600sqft building on a ~6200sqft lot that included reworked plumbing, curb/parking work, drainage, signage, full buildout, etc..

We started construction about mid-April 2023 and had our grand opening about four months later on August 5th.

Put images to the project.

You are the exception then, should have bought a lotto ticket then. 25 years as a contractor, most of those years dealing with municipalities here. I can count the times I had plans approved the first go around on one hand and have 3-4 fingers left over. There were always delays, revisions, comments, etc. Always. Sometimes I think it was just a game for them. And the bigger the municipality, the longer it took to wade through the red tape, bureaucracy and general stupidity that is city government.

Hell, my last project was a water treatment plant upgrade that the various city departments fought themselves over on approving plans. Took an additional 8 weeks to get approved plans because of the 'tardedness.

I dispute the notion we have enough hooker hotels.

I am talking about the design/permitting process, that is what is going to take them a long time. The actual construction can be the shortest part of the project.

I know. It didn't take us that long. We bought the building in April '22 and had the building up for lease until February '23 before we decided to do our own business.

Similar experience to mine.

Would add that for whatever reason the "ambiance"/feel etc with the high tops isn't a good BBQ joint vibe. Somewhat like Brisket House on Augusta. Midline retail space and odd to me.

Prob over-evaluating on my end but vibes are a big part of restaurants at the end of the day.

ETA: weird emoji, my b, not sure how that ended up there.

Yup. Hence why developer land contracts are typically long and a PIA bc they prefer to close the site into a construction loan and have a shovel in the ground day 1.

Not for the faint of hearts yet here I am.

Hotel Derek shut down in June. Now we know what will be in that spot in the Galleria area

Going to be a Marriott property opening next year.
