Another fun road to take is Jensen Rd from Downtown all the way to Tidwell. Just beware of the random tweakers walking in the middle of the road. Especially at night.
This is the way the world ends, this is the way the world ends,

McCarty Road/Hwy 90 between I10 and BW

Trucks, potholes, landfills, stray dogs, etc. That stretch has it all.

I've done some roadtrips through Mexico and this stretch looks like the outskirts of every smaller city. Dirt driveways, dusty as shlt, and lots of trucks. Also hourly motels.

There used to be a place on this stretch w/ a good 1lb burger, can't remember the name but it was Spanish I think.

Edit: Cafe Espanol - Gringo Burger

Not to mention the shorter commute to downtown.

How about 1960 from kuykendahl to I-45N?

Wild that we used to go to Nite Moves almost every Saturday during the summer back in the 1999-2001 era

I worked on Cypress Station in the mid 90s and my mom was in a nursing home west of there starting around 2012. The difference in that area just in that short time was pretty startling to me.

Had a girlfriend that lived at Cypress Station in '96. It was nice.

That didn't last long.

Memorial Drive from downtown all the way to almost the Beltway is nice. Woodway is nice.

There are some beautiful residential streets - North and South Blvd are just two.

Post Oak between Westheimer and the Loop is nice - but it's going downhill - was better before riderless bus lane and the removal of the cool street signs.
What do you boys want for breakfast BBQ ?.....OK Chili.

They can be scenic, for those who live in a bubble and have no idea what really goes on in Houston.

For me, its just another day at the office.

I am worried about the local crackhead on Old Humble Rd. Haven't seen that dude in a while.

North, South, or Sunset is the street Bill Murray is walking down near the end of Rushmore. Wes Anderson grew up either in Southampton or West U, so not surprising.

Some really great streets and homes in the Southampton and Rice University area.

Memorial inbound between the park and downtown is a great view also -- the skyline above the trees is nice.

I also dated a girl in the mid 90's who lived off of 1960 near Kuykendall. It was actually pretty nice area all the way to Willowbrook Mall. Katrina killed it and turned it into a ghetto.

When I first moved to Houston I worked for a GC and our offices were on Cherry St. off Collingsworth & Jensen. Let me tell you that was an interesting locale. Nobody stuck around after dark for sure.

My cousin worked for one of the Texas Steel locations in the 90's. He also didn't hang around after dark in that area.

Hempstead Highway as a nice ambiance to it.

Especially with all the taco trucks, no-tell motels and businesses selling granite & marble counter tops.

Good call for Cherry St. I bike across Cherry St (on Cavalcade) quite often. That's a good stretch to bike east/west in that part of town, going from Lindale neighborhood to Hunting Bayou trail.

Lots of good suggestions on here - but I'm still leaning Liberty Road as the "winner".

Hell, that area was basically a "no-go zone" even for cops 10-15 years ago. I remember hearing that MS-13 basically controlled all those apartment complexes and ran their operations out of there.

All that area roughly north of Bissonnet, south of Westpark, west of S. Rice, and east of Hillcroft.

No, I don't carry - I've ridden these less-than-scenic parts of town for 20+ years, primarily on weekends. I actually find them safer because there is so little car traffic (why would anyone WANT to drive these streets?). Sometimes I can go miles without having to deal with car traffic. There's an occasional stray dog but I carry a dog whistle which has helped.

I ride solo on these roads most weekends and have led organized groups of riders a few times. Also you don't have walkers, joggers etc. to deal with on these forgotten roads like on most bayou bike trails.

Clinton, Armour, Harvey Wilson, Neches, Cavalcade (east of Hardy), Hunting and Sims bayou trails, Labco/Tilgham, Old Clinton to Zindler and the other north/south streets, Burnett, Elysian Viaduct, Lawndale portion north of 225, the Lindale neighborhood - all places I've ridden a LOT (I ride to these places from the Heights where I live). I had ridden Liberty years ago a few times, was thinking about it recently and thus started this thread. Liberty, especially as you go east, is still the worst!

The stretch of liberty between 59 and the rail yard is like going back in time. Once past the rail yard it's just ****ty area for dumping tires and dead bodies.

There was an article on some national site a few years ago about the MS13 gangs in Gulfton; said that different cliques fought for control from building to building w/in the complexes.

So I started a new job last month and my office is off 290 near the HCAD building and coming home the Google Maps often finds it faster to route me though surface streets across the north side, inside the Beltway, so I've been driving roads through part of town I've never had reason to be on in the past.

Like driving Pinemont, Tidwell, and W. Little York between 290 & 45. Sometimes all the way to Jensen and/or 59. Or N. Shepherd between St. Pius X and 45.

And HOLY *****, it's 100% evidence of "import the 3rd world, become the third world." Reminds me of sketchy part of border towns on the other side of the Rio Grande.

Which also, begs the question- are there any areas inside the Beltway where lower-income/working class whites live or is it all black & Latino now? If so, where do those white folks live now?

Same. Any time I turned on to Holmes, I could just feel my spirit deflate a little. I do not miss driving that gauntlet.

+2. Mid 90's. I remember that was one place I worked that we ALL left by 5pm just to get away from there before dark. Tuboscope Vetco

It's been well over a decade since I drove it, but Clinton Drive in Galena Park was something else. Like you were stuck in a time warp circa 1975.
