My dad went on hospice for one day. On some level, he decided "nope, I'm not doing this" and was gone the next day.

Maybe Dr. Neil did the same thing.

Neil Frank was a pioneer in hurricane forecasting. A nice family man that excelled at what he loved. I always enjoyed it when he came back out of retirement to report on a storm. Sad to see him pass.

Houston has been blessed with some real legends in the local news business. Some of the best overall in the entire country.

93Q (maybe John Landers) had a song making fun of Neil's flat top. I've searched the internet for awhile seeing if anyone had a recording.

There are some 93Q recordings on YouTube but I don't have the patience to sift through them to find the Neil Frank Haircut song. It was funny though. Yeah, cool story.

Also really want to get a recording of Hudson and Harrigan's 12 Aggie Days of Christmas.

I grew up in an ABC household but would switch over for Neil Frank's weather when I controlled the remote b/c I didn't like Ed Brandon (or his creepy coke-head personality).

Fondly remember getting our hurricane tracking charts at Randall's then watching Dr. Neil's forecast.

I'm gonna get me a Neil Frank haircut
I'm gonna cut off all of my hair

That's all I got, and I probably messed up the lyrics badly.

What a great memory you jogged. I loved that. Getting hot off the press tracking maps next to the Dr. Frank cardboard cutout (I think I remember that) and then tuning in morning noon and night to get the data to plot! Great times!

What a legend. My parents would watch Dave on 13 but flip over to watch Dr Frank for weather.

Side note if your kids like Forest Frank, Christian musician, Neil was his grandfather. Forest and his wife just had a son recently and named him after Neil.

To make it Texas A&M related, Forrest Frank was on of the two in the foul called Surfaces, which had the intro song at Kyle Field between the Kanye stuff.

The man didn't need a low cut blouse or hiked up skirt to bring Houstonians the weather.

Just a flat top haircut and the most accurate forecast his profession had.

R.I.P Dr. Frank.

I remember Dr Neil had a rough time starting out as a TV meteorologist. Live, on air reports require a bit of flexibility as producers ask to shorten or stretch out their talking to fit time needs and it took a while to master. He wasn't Alan Ashby bad, though.

Another Houston News station legend passes away. I remember watching the news with my grandparents in the early and late 90's. It's just not the same anymore.

RIP to a Houston legend.

Quote:

My dad went on hospice for one day. On some level, he decided "nope, I'm not doing this" and was gone the next day

Both of my parents were scheduled to go to hospice the next morning when I believe they both said, "Nope" and passed - mom in a palliative care room, dad in a hospital room.

I got to Houston in early January 2007....and have never looked back.

I'm glad I got to see all the legends on their last rides.

Man. You just did catch Marvin. He died summer of 2007.

You probably missed Ron Stone and Steve Smith.
