sad story

between this crash and the one in North Carolina last month...

if your rich friend invites you to take a ride on his or her small private airplane...um, er,

I've grown pretty averse to small craft travel.

Lost a buddy in a solo flight while still in our 20's, and have known others that survived crashes or emergency landings. I understand statistical aberrations, but it would probably have to be a real necessity for me to get into something smaller than a commercial shuttle.

My dad was an Army aviator for 20+ years then flew for DOE for another decade or so. He was always nervous about private pilots. His concerns were pilots who didn't fly enough to really be proficient, having to answer to impatient clients, and whether privately owned aircraft were completely maintained. It's an unforgiving occupation when things go wrong.
I have a friend that litigates airplane crash cases as part of his job. With respect to maintenance, after everything he's seen, he refuses to get on an airplane unless it's operated by someone approved by the FAA/JAA or a company whose insurance requires them to maintain their aircraft to OEM specs. Apparently there's a LOT of "deferred maintenance" out there.

My dad was a Vietnam veteran and wasn't a guy to get scared about much. The only time I really saw him get really visibly nervous was right after I got married, a buddy of mine offered to take my wife and I for a flight around Virginia. We were visiting dad in D.C., and when I told him what our plan for the day was while he was at work, I instantly saw the concern in his face. All he said was, "Call me the minute you land."

I've never understood this thought process. It's like saying you won't date a supermodel because of the downside.

There isn't a thing you can say about private planes that isn't exponentially worse every day on the roads and invalidates the argument unless you walk everywhere. The only real difference is there's a lot more requirements, training, and barrier to entry in private aviation. Not to mention the vast majority of the time you are actually in control and not worried about a drunk driving the wrong way or Jennifer on her phone.

I'm not arguing one side vs the other...but one difference is when things do go wrong in aviation, there's a much higher chance of catastrophic injury/death.

I'm not exactly sure what argument you're trying to make, but the odds are significantly stronger for me or any dude I know to be involved in an aviation incident than to date a supermodel.

I think if you look at the "flying is safer than driving" data, you'll find it's mostly built on the airlines' track records. When you look just at general aviation, things look a lot different.

Yeah I would have expected at least a Gulfstream 5 for a firm like that. Have to wonder if they had a better jet in the hanger broke down perhaps.
Sad event regardless of the politics mentioned. Prayers to the families.

Challenger 600 is a VERY nice ride.
Former employer briefly operated a 300. The KingAir 200s comfortablely accommodated 6 pax. The Challenger 300, was furnished differently with a 3 seat sofa and seated 9 in a cabin tall enough to stand straight. As I recall the 600 is a stretched 300. Both are very capable of trans Atlantic travel.

apparently the plane sat on the runway for 17 minutes after deicing

exceeding the allowable / recommended time limit of 9 minutes

It was probably 12 or so years ago I saw a plane "crash" land in a field.

For those of you familiar with the Porter area, I was getting gas at that gas station at the corner of 1314 and Sorters when I saw a plane flying low over 1314 with it's engine off and then banking hard right before it got to that Jack In the Box and landing in the field. I hopped in my truck and rushed over there and got there as they were climbing out. Luckily, everyone seemed to be OK, but the pilot said the engine just died.

Juan Brown just released a video on the NTSB preliminary report. Pretty damning.

Between that, DEI hires rampant in the commercial sector, and just the nature of airports and airplanes in general and all the idiots you deal with...we have gone back to embracing 'the road trip' when possible. I would pretty much rather drive to 30A with my family and have the freedom to do whatever we want along the way, then do the whole airports and car rental thing. Yes, I realize I am weird and in the extreme minority.

I prefer driving as well, but it's mainly because I'm cheap and flying with 3 kids doesn't jive with that. We drive to the Iowa farm every year and will be driving to Colorado Springs this summer.

Now that they're older, we can pretty much do 15 hours with minimal stops. I don't mind driving on freeways where I can just chill while the wife reads and the kids eff around in the back. What I hate are routes that take us through small towns and their BS speed limits and stop lights. One way my wife likes us to go when we go to Iowa is up through Broken Bow, OK, which if you've ever driven from Houston to Lufkin before the I-69 bypass of that chit hole Diboll (and soon to be Corrigan), it's just like that from Livingston all the way to Fort Smith, AR. Speed up, slow down, stop, speed up, slow down, speed up, get caught behind Bubba and Bobbie doing 53 on a 2 lane 70 mph road and no way to pass them, slow down, speed up, finally pass the slow asses, get yelled at by the wife for driving like a lunatic, slow down, stop...I hate that route and try my best to avoid it.

On top of the annoying traffic flow, both of these places were crooked speed traps for decades. Although they seem to have finally relaxed things a bit. We caught an officer straight up lying about my dad's speed after he pulled us over in Corrigan about 15 yrs ago. I called him out and he clammed up and ended up giving my dad a warning. I had just randomly been watching my dad's speed, can't even remember why, when he got popped...the cop inflated it by like 10mph.

Wait, can you bypass Diboll now?

Crooked cops in small east Texas towns?

This is brand new information!

Yes, part of the I-69 build out, they're building bypasses to both of those places. Corrigan's is still under construction, so you'll need to go through the town, but Diboll's is open and you can just continue on the freeway to the east of town...but the cops are still out there popping speeders.

Be careful out there! A few years ago there was a scandal where a cop had a motorist pulled over and THREW a coke all over the motorist's white shirt.

Here's found footage from the internet:

Ha oh yeah, that was back when Long John Silver's was still running their spicy fish and chicken plank combo and we were hungrier than a couple of goat f'ers at the end of Ramadan. We could see it right there on the horizon, adding insult to injury. Boy was he peeved!
