My dad's family arrived here in 1918, came to work the oil patch in Thompson (Just on the other side of the Brazos from Sienna Plantation). They were Czech settlers, came from Moravia actually.

My mom's side of the family, British in heritage, first settled in Oklahoma, oil again, and moved to Texas in 1919.

I was always partial to the Molinas on Hwy 6 just south of Westheimer instead, but they closed that one up a while ago. For some reason, the other Molinas locations are good, but that one was better.

How long since you've been to the one on Westheimer near Voss? We used to be fans of this location many years ago, but tried it recently and I was blown away by how bad it was. Service too...it was horrendous. We were cracking up over how bad the food and experience was so at least it brought some laughter. Our waiter (guessing Dominican) was so rude part of me wondered if we were on a hidden camera show.

That vinegar-y salsa still on-point though.

It has been probably 4 years since I have been to that one. I was at the one on Bellaire within the last few months and that one is still good. The one out in Fulshear on 1463 is pretty good too. But none of them are as good as the old one on Hwy 6.

My mom and dad and grandparents history in Houston goes way back. My parents both graduated from Jeff Davis HS in the early '40's.
My mother would tell the story of working upstairs in the train station building in 1945 where the Astros offices are now outside left field. She heard people crying in the hallway and learned that FDR had died. She was an Astros fan and surprised when they built downtown at that location.

Yeah I miss that one for sure. I wish it could have somehow been transported to that little bar and restaurant enclave at I-10/Hwy 6...I feel like it would still be thriving there.

It will be soon with all of the subdivisions growing northwest up 290 from Houston and south from BCS on Hwy 6

That's no lie. Same for where I live now and eventually even my hometown of Lake Jackson will be little more than a suburb of Houston at the rate things are spreading.

I didn't move to the Houston area until after college (Pearland, then Clear Lake/Webster), before that growing up in LJ. Houston was the big city north of us that we went to when we went to Astros games. Every now and again my grandfather would take us up for a day trip so we could see the Herman fountains and the skyscrapers. As a kid I remember driving up Almeda (521) through Fresno before 288 was built, then eventually up 288. We always tried to be the first to see the outline of the skysrapers in downtown driving there.

Pretty sure my dad hated every second of those drives and I don't blame him. But not as much as I hate driving up 288 into town these days.

You forgot one part of that trip from Lake Jackson to Houston - the inevitable stop and wait for that damn train in Angleton.

It was such a glorious day when I found out Angleton had finally built an overpass over that track. Of course, that was years after I left Lake Jackson for good, and I was only going back down there to visit family.
