Lady Eagles of Canyon High, that is ...

One win away from their 14th state title and coach Joe Lombard's 1,000th career win

LINK - Canyon News

(actually, we used to call them the "Eaglettes" back when I was in high school, but I guess the practice of adding "ette" to the team name when referring to the girls team has fallen into disfavor, as now all you hear is Lady Eagles, Lady Wildcats, Lady Varmints, whatever ... my only problem with that is it brings to (my) mind a bunch of middle-aged ladies dashing down the court in dresses and ballroom pumps (scuffing up the hardwood!), or even worse, Jerry Lewis calling out HEY, LLLAAADDDYYY!!!!! ...

Although I seem to recall in Dalhart they called their girls team the Wolverines, even through a wolverine is an entirely different critter than a wolf, but admittedly Wolverine sounds better than Wolfette ...)

I just love it when teams from other parts of the state head into a game against the Lady Eagles and get their heads handed to them (of course, then the Chronicle or the DMN only gives the game about 6 column inches on page 4 of sports section, which isn't so great)

The shorts were a lot shorter back in the '70s, which was a good thing (for the girls team, at least) ...

True to form, the story in the Houston Chronicle deposited on my doorstep this morning was 6 column inches (of which 2 column inches was the headline), buried on page C12 ...

Oh well, thank Heaven and Al Gore for the internet, so I can get the story from other sources ...

Brazos, when were you in Canyon? I was there in the old Eaglette days too, but I'm probably still older than you.

I had all my schooling in Canyon, starting in 1964 and graduating in 1976, so we were there at the same time. I'm trying to think of those in the class behind me that went to A&M. If you want, send me a PM and we'll see how well our memories work.

Whoops Brazos, looking at your name, doesn't look like you went to A&M, so my mistake. Send me a PM anyway.

Class of '77

I recall a few people in your class (Eric Rathjen, Marcella Patterson, Mike Johnson, Chris Jones, and Bob Splawn come to mind ...)

I earned my BS at WTSU (so my Aggie friends insist that I'm retroactively an Aggie [ouch]) and then my MA at UT-Austin

Brazos, I've been thinking but can't place you or remember hardly any names in your class. I'm sure I would recognize them if I heard them, but that's what the years to do you. One of these days I'll come across the yearbook. I was editor of the newspaper for a couple of years, and wrote a column named Vocals and Views. I hung around with Ken Cooper, Donnie Bell and some others. Canyon was a great place to grow up in the 60's and 70's, and is probably still pretty good today. My goal for lots of years was to get back there, but I never was able to. Now, my goal is to get to College Station and watch Aggie sports and play as much golf as I can. Hopefully we can retire there.

I graduated from Hale Center in 1973, lived in Canyon from 1982-1984, and returned for good in 1994 when our son was in 1st grade (he's a Jr. at A&M now). I still think it's a great place to raise kids.

If you haven't been back in 2-3 (or more) years, you would not believe the growth. Very little open land between Canyon and Amarillo now, and new houses are springing up in every direction.

CanyonAg-My mother still lives in Canyon, at that retirement complex by the new special events center. We go up every so often, but don't get to spend much time there. When we do, I concentrate on the things that are still the same and all the memories that flood my mind. I envy you for living in such a special place, but I've been blessed where God has taken me, and pray he is now leading us to College Station.

Wrote for The Eagle's Tale, eh?

My first thought would be that you are Charles Haley, but then I remembered that his column was titled Star & Gripes, so I'm guessing you are Randy Breitling ...

You wouldn't have known (or even noticed) me back then unless you were involved with Band, Muscial Workshop, or Art. I was somewhat withdrawn and introverted as an underclassman and generally kept a low profile, at least until my senior year. Unless we were both in one of the English classes instructed by D'Ann Moutos, I doubt that we had any classes together.

Funny you mention Ken Cooper, though. He lived just a few doors down from us on Conner Drive. Stacie and Kellie Wright (class of 75) lived just across the street from us. (Stacie and Kellie and I used to play together when we were little kids, but of course by high school they were waaay out of my league).

Perhaps you remember Terry Floyd from The Eagle's Tale? He's living in San Leandro, CA, and works in IT for the California Department of Health or something like that. We've kept in touch off and on over the years and I have his e-mail address if you want to tell him hello.

No argument there. When we built our house at the intersection of Conner/Thompson in 1964, it was literally on the edge of town. Behind our back yard was a barb wire fence and an open pasture that stretched all the way to the southern horizon. I used to love wandering in the open country there; it was a novel experience after living in Rossmoor, CA, where my world was bounded on the west by the San Gabriel River Freeway and on the east by the old Los Alamitos Army Air Field ...

Brazos, Charles was a good friend of mine too, and I worked on the paper with Terry Floyd. Your memory is a lot better than mine.

By the way, Mrs. Moutos was one of the best teachers I ever had. She probably had the biggest impact on my academic success because she taught me how to analyze what I've read and then be able to express my thoughts in writing. I took just about every class she taught, so we probably had some together.

I wholeheartedly concur, for the exact reasons you have stated. Unflappable, demanding, with little patience or mercy for slackers and laggards ...

"Tuffy toenails!" = Mrs. M's all-purpose rejoinder to all excuses, alibis or explanations that she considered to be substandard (which is to say, virtually all)

BTW, were you in her Classical Backgrounds class that day in May 1975 when some practical joker rode his motorcycle down the length of the North Hallway?

I think we were discussing the Cyclops episode in The Odyssey when we heard a motorcycle revving up.

Mrs. M: My, that's a loud motorcyle. You would almost think it was in --

SQQEEEALLLL!!! VVVRRROOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOMMMMMMMMMMMM!!!

(Shadow flashes by the door)

Mrs. M. calmy walks to the door, peeks out, returns to the lectern --

Mrs. M.: It was a motorcycle. Now, we were discussing how Odysseus couldn't resist taunting the blinded Cyclops as they sailed away from the island ...

(those may not have been her exact words, but it fairly describes her reaction to the incident)

Good old Pioneer Estates. I have always considered that to be where the outstanding but unpretentious folks in Canyon choose to live. (but my acquaintances in Hunsley Hills used to say, "that's where the cheapskates live!"

The real snooty ooty neighborhood now is Canyon North, to the north of Hunsley.
