Anyone else see the footage of a tornado near Lamesa on GMA this morning? I think that's the first time we made a national newscast since the big prison riot in '99 or '00. And of course, they pronounced it wrong.

People in radio/tv should be required by law to call the local chamber of commerce to find out how the locals pronounce it ...

Most of the people who live in other parts of Texas don't know it's pronounced luh-MEE-suh ...

I used to tell my acquaintances from Borger that they should pronounce it as "Bor-ZHAY" , just to make it sound exotic and classy ... they never thought that was very funny ...

Its probably not necessary to contact the local chamber of commerce but I would assume a national news show would at least contact one local person to get information on a story. Otherwise its just poor reporting.

Wasn't complaining about it, just pointing out the same thing as you - no one knows the right way to say it. Thanks for the sarcasm though, sip.

How did they pronounce it?

(And why were you watching GMA?)

They pronounced it Lamaysa, instead of the correct Lameesa. Not that it really matters, the place is a crap hole no matter how you say it.

And I only had the TV on that channel to see the local weather.

Maybe I missed something...where did he say you were complaining?

And where was the sarcasm?

BBH is a Panhandle guy, seems to be pretty good guy as far as I can see.

I doubt he really thinks TV/radio people should contact the local chamber of commerce to see how the locals pronounce every town before they say it on the air. So it just seemed like a snippy, sarcastic comment to my post about the guy saying it wrong. Maybe he didn't mean it that way though.

I didn't read it that way at all. Of course it is nearly impossible to discern "tone" from an Internet posting.

I gave him the benefit of the doubt because he's never been a smart@$$ in the posts I've seen. Maybe he is on the football board, but not here.

Plus, I tend to agree with him. It is sloppy for radio/TV folks to just assume they know how to say a name.

Years ago, I flipped by the TV nighttime sopa opera "Dallas". I stopped because I heard a character mention a town called "La may sa". So I stopped and watched, wondering if they meant "La me sa". Sure enough, the plot was the blowing up of the Ewing family oil field. A character was talking to a sheriff driving a "Dawson County" patrol car.

The climatic scene was when the field was blown up. Against the backdrop of the nearby pine forest, one could see a thicket of tall metal derricks, just before they disappeared in a cloud of fire and smoke.

The unintentional humor was off the scale that night.

Dad grew up in Ackerly, and sand, cotton fields, and scattered pumpjacks were all I remembered. Must have been a different part of Dawson county.

Oh no, not Ackerly! Please tell me he wasn't a Sands Mustang.

That's pretty funny about the Dallas episode. I lived in southern Dawson County my whole life until I went to college, and I don't remember any pine forests either. They must have filmed that scene up around O'Donnell.

CanyonAg: You are half right – I am (or was) a Panhandle guy

HighTO4: I was venting my annoyance over broadcast newspersons with 6-figure incomes who don't do the basic headwork of confirming the pronunciation of place names (a call to the local ABC affiliate would have set them straight). (and yes, I firmly believe they need to do that, just as every print journalist should learn to spell properly)

It was not my intent to sarcastically ridicule your comment, but I can see how it comes across that way. That was careless composition on my part, and I offer an apology for the offense taken.

Brazos, no big deal. Like Canyon said, it's hard to tell tone over the internet. Sorry for assuming the worst.
