Looks like the Chamber of Commerce is thinking about taking the lead to get package sales in the hub city, at least beer and wine. I was curious as to what the prevailing thoughts are on this issue.

Personally, I am totally for selling beer, wine and liquor in the city. I think they may just try for beer and wine though, which would still be a huge upgrade over what we have now.

I have heard the argument that having beer and wine sales in the city would lead to more dwi arrests, etc. I have worked for the PD here for going on 17 years, and I can tell you, we have no shortage of drunks on the road now. I do not think our problem drinkers are having a hard time getting the stuff now, be they college kiddos or hardcore drunks. The same argument can be made that having that guy drive to the corner instead of across town will decrease the number of drunks on the road. The other argument there is that the stores have the responsibility not to sell to intoxicated persons, etc.

I know this issue will put the church's and Majestic Inc. (the name of the company that owns alot of the strip's stores) in bed together, and that may be a tough combo to beat.

Anyway, I am curious as to where the peeps come down on this issue.

Mark me down as a strong yes.

There may not be time to do the job right, but there is always time to do the job over!!

I am for the sales...one of the things I truely hate about having the beer outside the city limits is the Drunks are driving that far to get a drink which in my eyes increases the chances for an accident.

Since I don't actually live in Lubbock, I'm nostalgic. I like going out to the strip.

I very much see how I would not like it if I lived there.

It is ridiculous that we do not already have sales within the city limits. It will not increase the number of people who drink. It will increase the amount of tax revenue the city can receive.

Whether you are for or against package sales, it ought to be put up for a vote!!! The churches are fighting against even a vote on the issue.

Although I no longer live in Lubbock, I do have an opinion on this. I have always thought this was ridiculous law. I am sick of the far religious right trying to tell me what I can and cannot do. That is what this issue boils down to. They know if it does come up for a vote, it will pass. We were still living in Lubbock when Wolfforth went this route. I remember watching an interview on this subject with the Mayor of Lubbock. His arrogance and holier-than-thou attitude was nauseating. The interviewer asked point blank why he was opposed to this and his only answer was (paraphrased), "because this is my town and I don't want it". He never expressed any concern about what the citizens want. Also, (and someone please correct me if I am wrong), didn't the City of Lubbock just recently annex the Strip? This is a bit hypocritical isn't it? It is also another revenue stream in the form of sales tax, unless the city already has enough money. Sorry this is so long, I just had to rant.

Yes, the city has annexed the strip, but not the two stores east on 98th. I go down there to buy cause I save the city sales tax, plus Raiderland will match the United sales in Slaton. Same discount on wine, etc if you buy enough.

Doc's just opened a store on 98th street just inside the Wolforrth City limits, and it is busy....and the city of lubbock gets nary a dime.
