after saying i would never live in lubbock, i have decided that the big city is too much for my kids. my husband and i are thinking of moving back.
i feel like schools aren't as big an issue as they are here in dallas. granted, i am going by my memory of lubbock schools (20 years ago) how are they out there and where should we be looking?
any info is appreciated!

I have heard good things about the schools here. I don't have any kids but a few of my friends do and feel comfortable with there education and ratings. What age are your kids? Which area you looking at moving to?

yeah, i don't thinks its as big an issue as it is here.
i grew up in west lubbock, near greek circle, and my parents now live in tech terrace. i love tech terrace, but it seems like all the growth is south. we took a tour of vintage township and thought it was cool.....again, i just want to make sure schools are still what i remember them as.

As a teacher in Lisd, I would honestly send my kids out to Cooper, New Home, or Roosevelt because of the smaller atmospheres.

Can somebody post an anlysis of frenship vs cooper vs LISD. As the original poster said I am sure things have changed in the past 20 years since I grew up there.

I don't have any kids, but I have lived in Lubbock for 6 years and have cousins in the school system. If the small atmosphere is really important to you then the above poster was correct in suggesting Cooper and Frenship. However, I have had several friends who were students at Monterrey and Coronado and I think they are both pretty good large schools. Not inner-city like in Dallas. I would not suggest Lubbock High.

A friend at work ranked them in this order:

1: Cooper
2: LISD
3: Frenship

And the reasons were money and resources.

It all depends on what you are looking for. If you want your kids to have more academic opportunities and extraciricular activities not related to sports or ag, the Lubbock schools are probably better alternatives. If you need the comfort of smaller schools then those outside LISD work okay, but academic opportunities are more limited. Frenship is bigger than the others and has a little more. The magnet schools in Lubbock are strong. I serve on a local scholarship committee and the kids from Lubbock High far exceed what I see from any other school. There are also some good private school alternaives if you are so inclined. We send our junior high age child to Southcrest Christian and have been very pleased compared to what our other kids received in a small public school.

I was LISD throughout my school life. Preston Smith to Iron's Jr. High to Lubbock High School. I would say that if you go LISD, don't go Smith or Iron's. Definitely go LHS, by far the best school around the area, some of the best teachers and I walked into Tech with a semester done because of all the AP preperation the teachers gave me.

I don't know about Cooper. I worked with a bunch of kids that went to Cooper when I was in high school. They always seemed behind me in their studies, where they were in college preperation, etc. Maybe it was just that particular group of people, but I never really met a prepared person that went to Cooper.

Freindship...eh. I hear differing things. Some really like the education their kids receive and some think that it is just not good quality.

I would rank.

LISD - no comment on elementary, I would check out Atkins or Evans for JR. High (middle school) and LHS for high school

My kids went to Smith and Irons, and are at Coronado. They also are well-prepared for college (at TAMU!!) and took many AP and dual credit classes, and will enroll with 30+ hours complete (depending on transfer acceptances).

Academically, LHS is a magnet school so probably a little bit higher on that scale. But it's in a part of town that's not always too safe, and there's a BIG division between the "magnet" students and the "local" students.

thanks for the info!
it really doesn't sound like there's been much change in 30 years. good and bad i suppose.

i am a coronado graduate, and while those westerners did always remind us they were a magnet school, and thus smarter than us, i think i got a great educ. got into a&m!

thanks for all the input, and as you hear more....share, share, share.

i will say that to think of lubbock high as being "in a bad part of town" is funny since living in dallas. i use to think anything east of quaker was pretty sketchy. =)

Any elementary West of University is good.
Middle school, Evans or Hutch
High school, Mont or Coronado

My kids go to Rush now, then Hutch, the Coronado.

SW LISD = Cooper = Frenship

Honey Elementary is outstanding. Great and caring teachers.

if you want to go by the school with the highest rating from the state, then Frenship is the only one who received the recognized level in the high schools except for roosevelt. no school in lisd is above academically acceptable, and a few are academically unacceptable.

I would not suggest Frenship or Cooper, they receive good ratings for TAKS but that doesn't mean much when you're talking about preparing for college. I competed in UIL and I can tell you Coronado and LHS were always the best schools from the panhandle area in UIL academics. Like someone said ealier if you want your kids to have options other than sports or ag go with LISD.

I graduated from Monterey in '05 and I would not recommend the school. I honestly enjoyed it but it is very diverse much like all the schools in Lubbock. I would definitely suggest copper.

Same here... and would recommend all. ESPECIALLY LEAP program at LHS. Best thing I ever did in terms of education (which ultimately led to Terry Scholarship at A&M).
