Any hints? Tips? Condolences? Parts of town to avoid? Moving from E. TX out there for work. And yes, it has to do with cattle. Was living in Snyder, TX before that. That's the black-hole out there that's 1 1/2 hours from Midland, San Angelo, Abilene, and Lubbock.

Well, it's better than Snyder, if that helps.

320 from Colorado Springs, 250 from Red River....so it's not far to some pretty scenery.

Pack warm clothes. It gets verrrrrry cold in the winter.

Snyder? I am so sorry. That is just an awful looking town in the middle of nowhere.

Snyder? I spent many days there as a kid hunting quail, geese, ducks, coyotes, and fishing in stock tanks...

Guymon? I work there often which means in and around the thousands of hog lagoons....

I would choose Snyder any and every day...

But, ditto to CanyonAg as the mountains are closer than Snyder....the golf courses in Guymon and Liberal are better than the dirt track Western Texas college course!

You'll be a stone's throw away from Beaver OK, and the World Championship Cow Chip Throw conducted therein each April ...

You'll soon see why it was almost called Girlmon. The Ladies Quilting Club is the biggest thing in town.

Stay far away from The New Dragon Chinese Restaurant on Highway 54.

I've been told that their employees have been seen to scrape food from plates on the table back onto the buffet. You can't escape it by ordering from the menu because anything you order from the menu that is on the buffet will usually be put on your plate from the buffet.

There is a Chinese buffet on the east side of Highway 54 that is ok. I thought their food was really good when they were at a different location. They now have too many items on the buffet and it is hurting their quality. At least I haven't heard or seen anything there that makes me think eating there is a health hazard.

We eat lunch most Sundays at the Pancake House these days. I'm not real impressed with their food. Sometimes it is ok. I think that J&J's on up the street is better.

Lots of people eat at Cactus Jack's. I've never been there, but I have heard employees comments that make me not want to ever eat there.

I like Yesterdays but haven't been there in a while.

The Acapulco is generally quite good. The only time I ever ate there when I wasn't happy with the food was at a Sunday buffet. I don't think they do that any more.

Holy Crap. Texhoma made a TexAgs Post. UnFRIGGING believable. My dad grew up in Texhoma, and I spent many, many a holiday/vacation there. Loved it, and now I drive thru and wonder what the hell we did to pass the time. My grandfather owned the hardware store there in Texhoma, and we loved rooting for the Red Devils!

Trips to Guymon were actually seen as going "into the city".

Good luck.

There may not be time to do the job right, but there is always time to do the job over!!

There is/was a place in Guymon we called fast eddie's - steaK house

busdriver, where do you work ?

When I was a kid, I used to like spending a day at the Texhoma sale ring.

My first recollection of ever eating barbecue was out in their parking lot in about 1960. I think that it was an annual thing back then.

In the 1960s and 1970s it was called the Linde's Club.

Their primary appetizer was certainly unusual -- turkey fries. That's the only place I have ever seen that serves them. The only other place I've seen them was in the frozen foods section of the old Tri-State Grocery Store that closed in the early 1970s.

By the way, if you want some Blue Bell Ice cream, you can find it at the grocery store in Spearman. They mainly just have the basic flavors.

Thanks for the tips! I went to Scottie's. Neat little sports bar in a really wierd spot off of 54. I'll be living in a hotel until the house closes. So, I'm sure I'll be able to get out on the weekends and check some of these places out. Gruver is the closest DQ. I've been told that. There's a whiskey I can only get in CO called Stranahan's & Springfield is 2hrs away. Closer than I was, tho!

From the top of my plant, I can see wind turbines in TX and turn around & see the top of an elevator in KS. Wild, huh?

Hasn't been too awful cold. High was 60 here today. I'm used to the wind and the few trees around all leaning towards the NE.

One other thing -- don't go to Lake Optima expecting to do any fishing, boating, swimming, diving, scuba, or anything else involving water.

But if you want to build a house there, they used to have some lakefront developments. You can probably get a lot extremely cheap and have the whole lake to yourself.

For things to do:

The first Saturday in May is the Pioneer Day Parade. They also have the rodeo and other events as well.

If you don't mind a little drive, the third Saturday of June, July, August, and September there is the Dance Platform in Lipscomb, Texas. I've yet to make it to this, but I've heard many good things about it. See http://naturallyyourstx.tripod.com/id17.htm.

There's a 4th of July Parade in Gruver every other year. After the parade, there is a barbecue in the park followed by a full afternoon of events. It alternates each year with Spearman, but for some really perverse reason, Spearman didn't bother with theirs last year.

If you're Lutheran, there is Oslo Lutheran Church about 20 miles south of Guymon. Turn right at the state line just before you get to the windmills and follow the highway until you see the church a mile to the west.

In July each year, there is a rib cookoff benefit on a ranch in Hansford County. Be prepared to make a donation. If you want, there is an auction as well. Bring your own lawn chair. Here are pictures from 2007, 2008, and 2009: http://hscharlie.gruver.net/gruverarea/07stavlobenefit/index.htm,http://hscharlie.gruver.net/gruverarea/08_stavlobenef/index.htm, and http://hscharlie.gruver.net/gruverarea/09stavlobenefit/index.htm. I'm not sure how extensive the invitation is, but I think it is generally to people of Hansford County, especially Gruver, and to anyone who attends Oslo Lutheran Church.

In late July to early August each year, there is a folk music festival in Mobeetie, Texas. There is camping available. Bring your own lawn chair.

Welcome to the Panhandles! We have an Aggie club in Hansford County (Gruver, Spearman). Don't have a lot of activities, but will have a Muster. Details will be posted on Assn. website and I'll post it on here. Hope you'll join us.

I work in Guymon but (thankfully) drive in from Texas everyday. I avoid the Alcupolco. Foods ok, but the old man who is the owner did some prison time for some pretty bad stuff. The big influence in Guymon is the Seaboard packing plant that employees a couple thousand people (at least half of whom are illegal).

Search Vincent Costilla on the oklahoma dept of corrections. He was convicted of "Lewd Or Indecent Proposals/Acts To Child".

Here's a corrected link to the sex offender registry.

http://docapp8.doc.state.ok.us/servlet/page?_pageid=229&_dad=portal30&_schema=PORTAL30&offender_id=20600&city=Guymon

You had a space between the url tag and the "http". Many browsers don't like that.

Lots of Blue Bell in Perryton United.

The Walmart in Guymon isn't bad - at least you have a Walmart!

It is really good if you like things "a little bit country".

It reminds me of what Texas is...

I know you probably already read the food thread, but if you are in Perryton La Casita for breakfast and Dixie Dog for lunch is the best!! Bryan's Corner has the red barn with some pretty good sunday noon meals!

Harder - I am going to have to disagree.

Dixie Dog is far from the best....I guess it depends what you are comparing to, just not many good burgers in Perryton.

Went to Scottie's for a 2nd time tonight. Good Cheesesteak sandwich. I believe the call it the "Randal Cunningham". Hunny's BBQ has HUGE portions but pretty good ribs. Went with a co-worker's family & it took all of us to put a boat of ribs to rest.

Went to a bar called Cowboy Bob's. Saw Dan & Robert Etbauer and they both introduced themselves. Friggen AWESOME!! Yeah, I rope some.

There's a chineese buffet that was surprising on the S. side of 54. Can't remember the name. Grumpy asian lady yells at the help, but the food was good.

Place I'm working is right next to the Seaboard plant. They either employ 3500 and kill 5000 head of hogs or employ 5000 and kill 3500 head. I can't remember. Still a lot. Quite a traffic jam leaving that plant at shift change.

There's a place called Big D's one town East of Guymon on the US highway. Complete hole in the wall greasy spoon, but good.

I'm enjoying it here. Living in a hotel for weeks and weeks gets old but I like this town. Thanks everybody for all the great hints. I'll be looking to join an A&M club once I'm settled in. You guys think I could start one here in Guymon?

Is that the one just south of 12th street and 54? It's pretty good, but I don't remember any grumpy Asian lady yelling at the help.

Hunny's is a local favorite for catering. It's the only place around that has good barbecue that I know of.

I remember Sutphen's and all the clown paintings, etc. - but I am curious why a screw up in Gruver would be that big of a deal! Really, that many people in Gruver had Sutphen's cater?

If so, they should try The Rib Joint in Perryton. It is actually one of the few places in Perryton worthy of mentioning food wise. They cater all the things we do now (we used to have Dyer's do it) and it is pretty good. (Perryton probably isn't any farther than Borger from Gruver).

meatball-

True, maybe I should say best burger in Perryton. I live in Amarillo now, but grew up in Perryton. The best was to eat a big beefy, cheese tatertots, and a large dr. pepper at lunch in high school. 2 hours later in basketball practice it tasted just as good coming up
