I just saw your response to my post over on the History side.

I posted here because this is basically the Panhandle/South Plains/CanyonAg forum. (BTW-only FossilAg has better posts than you do)

It is a great story. Please tell her congrats on the upcoming 30 years of marriage and surviving being transplanted to the Texas Panhandle. Only the tough survive in my old home part of the state.

Appreciate it. I'm glad you enjoy what I post, though I often feel like I'm monopolizing the board. And I'm a pretty opinionated old fart, so I probably annoy more than I please.

Yeah, she's pretty wonderful to stay with me all these years. The funny thing is that we actually got to be friends at A&M through one of her brother's friends. I'd sort of lost touch with her brother after he left the Corps. And now, after all these years, he's moved up here and is just a block away. But the brother's friend stayed in the Band, and when the spouse came to Aggieland, we were re-introduced.

Good to have some of her family close, too. Though she was originally from Houston, she has little family left there. Her parents and siblings left Houston as fast as they could, too.

She's a convert to the wide open spaces and the unique beauty of the Plains. And as she says, after living in Houston, it's nice to have seasons.

Funny how small decisions and who you know influence the rest of her life. She never in a million years would have thought she'd end up on the high plains married to a farmer.

I'm watching it play out in the next generation, too. Son is an Aggie, marrying an Aggie this summer. She's headed to med school, so who knows if they'll ever move back this way. Daughter is a junior at USAFA, just got her senior ring Friday night. She also just got engaged to a fellow cadet, and heaven only knows where life will take them.

But it's all good.

You know, DB, I bet Mickey never had a thought about coming to the high plains.

Mebbe some day I will come back.

I'd have to disagree with the assertion that Houston doesn't have seasons. It actually has three. Hot, soggy blast furnace, and don't go outside.

Having lived in the Houston area (Brazoria County) now for 20 years, I would say that there are two main seasons on the Gulf Coast:

1) Hurricane Season
2) Not Hurricane Season

(which roughly coincide with the months when you can/cannot engage in outdoor activities without running the risk of heat exhaustion/heat stroke) ...

My wife (a Panhandle native) often comments about how she misses having 4 seasons ... having grown up in Canyon, I recall the seasons consisting mostly of summer and winter, with a sort of brief transition period in between ...

In any case, autumn is useless in the absence of rolling hills with foliage turning colors, e.g.:

My recollection of autumn in the Panhandle was the grass turning from green to pale beige. Whee ...

btw, y'all are welcome to our rain. We had about 10 inches in Angleton last Thursday/Friday and they are predicting another 10-12 inches in the next 48 hours ...
