I posted this on the West Texas board (my bad), but CanyonAg77 suggested I post it on this board.

posted 9:54p, 03/09/11

"From what little I can find from a Google search, it appears that it is.

I was a Charter Member of the Club, way back in 1982. At the time, I was an AF Major at Cannon AFB and was the Detachment Commander of the Cannon weather unit.

I got a letter inviting me to join the newly formed Muleshoe club and my wife and I attended a kick-off event at a Muleshoe Ag's farm.

In 1983, I volunteered to be the Club's Muster Chairman and set up the event for the Cannon AFB Officer's Club. The Base Commander was an Ag, Col Warde Boyce. (Note: The Base Commander is NOT the ranking officer on most AF bases - the Wing Commander is. More on that later.)

We had a GREAT time and the Muster was very well attended. I'm thinking it was 75-100 folks in attendance, but my memory could be faulty at my advance age.

I also recall that it was on a Friday night - which back in the day was always the biggest night at the O Club on a TAC base - with the Wing Commander holding court at the bar.

The Ags were in the ballroom, which was right next to the bar, so we got a lot of notice from the fighter jocks and hangers on that were in the bar - including the Wing CC.

After several trips to the bar to buy drinks for various and sundry Ags, the Wing CC came up to me and gave me one hell of a good-natured razzing. He was an Arkansas grad, so was well aware of the Ags and our traditions.

The following Monday, he gave me ANOTHER razzing in front of the Wing Staff right after I gave the daily wx briefing at Standup.

There were several Ags in the club who had kids at A&M or in High School who were interested in the AF. I remember giving tours of Cannon AFB to several of them.

And can't remember names from that far back, but a couple of folks I became friends with were dry-land cotton farmers from the Earth, TX area.

They were quite interested in the fact that I was in the weather business - hailstorms had a MAJOR impact on their cotton crops.

Lots of fond memories of my association with the Muleshoe Ags from 1982-84.

Edit: Forgot to add that Cannon AFB is in Clovis, NM, just up the road from Muleshoe. (Of course, ya'll know what "just up the road" means in West Texas.)"

Any takers on this board?

I'm from Muleshoe and my parents still live there. At that time, I'm sure Jimmy Gleason was probably involved in the Muleshoe A&M Club (he was a Vet in Muleshoe for years and now lives in Levelland). Another Vet in town, Barry Cowart, could have also been involved.

My family actually grows potatoes not too far from Earth (In between Springlake and Littlefield to be exact).

Norman - I don't often visit this board but glad I did and saw your post. I happen to live in Clovis (moved here in '79) and was a charter member of the Muleshoe Club. In fact I was on the planning committee along with a few others including the 2 that Spud mentioned. There was also Max Crittendom (sp?) who was with the corn processing plant (now Azteca) and Bill Lyles, with Muleshoe State Bank. May have been 1 or 2 others that I can't recall. Bill was the clubs first president.

In answer to your question about whether it is still active - the answer is No. I stayed with the club until '85, but then met my wife of 25 years now along with inheriting an instant family - 2 boys. So my priorities changed drastically and I ended up dropping out of the club. Not sure exactly when the club actually disbanded, but it has not been active for several years now.

By the way, the farmer's place you referred to was that of J.D. Cage's. I believe he has since passed on but was one of many good Ags in the Muleshoe area - it really surprised me how many former students we had around the area when we started forming the club.

I also remember the Muster at CAFB that you're talking about. It was well attended and a great event. I've attended many different events at CAFB over the years, but now that the base has become part of Special Ops it is pretty much off-limits for us local civilians.

If you want to find out more drop me a line at dond@plateautel.net, plus I can give you my contact info in case you ever happen to pass this way again.

Glad you saw the thread. Great post! Sorry to hear about base being more off limits now. I was stationed there twice and the base and city had excellent relationships. In fact, if it weren't for the Clovis Committee of 50 (are they still around?), Cannon AFB would have been closed long ago.

Packing up for a trip to our lake house right now, but I'll drop you an email next week.
