Record high temperatures at “TEXAS” this summer have put the wheels in motion to air condition the Pioneer Amphitheater at Palo Duro Canyon State Park. Kris Miller, executive director of the Texas Panhandle Heritage Foundation, explained the project to those in attendance at the annual board meeting Friday evening at the Amarillo Club.

“Evaporative air conditioning would be used throughout the day blowing cooled air over the seating in the amphitheater,” Miller said.

The seats would be covered with a space-age metalized plastic known as Mylar. This thermal-type blanket is capable of a multitude of uses and is most often used in sleeping bags. It is lightweight and durable and can sustain the air blowing beneath it during the day. The Mylar would cover the seats during the day.

“We believe it would push the temperature down 20 degrees at least,” Miller said. “The concrete would be covered from the sun, as well, which would make the seats cooler.”

When guests arrive the Mylar would be removed and if the noise is not a factor and it’s needed, the evaporative air conditioners would continue to blow.

I wonder what Col. Henry would have to say about that. In the good ol' days, we just suffered in silence.

Changes also include a longer finale with high tech dancing waters to wrap up the show with a patriotic style.

Tell me this is a hoax. Please.

So this would be like the Baylor football stadium tarp o'shame, except they'd roll it up and actually sell the tickets?

The cynic in me says this lasts until the first big wind or hailstorm.

The optimist says it might help. If you could cool down that big thermal mass o'concrete, it might help things stay tolerable until the sun goes down.
