Howdy,

Long time lurker, first time poster. I am from Panhandle (the town, not the area) and am looking to take my 4 year old son for his first camping trip. I would like to have a campfire and since Hansford county is one of the few counties without a burn ban, I was considering Lake Palo Duro. Are there any good places to do a one night stay? I am thinking about going this weekend.

Thanks and Gig'em

Have you called anyone about the lake? It's only at about 5% capacity.

See if you can find the poster eric76, I think he's from that area.

Palo duro has a nice place to camp and rv hook ups. Call and visit with Jim Derrington at Palo Duro Lake. 806-882-4401

Thanks guys

I am not worried about fishing, this is just a chance for the two of us to get away from mama and the 7 month old for a night.

I'm probably not the one to ask about it. It's across the county from me and I haven't been to it in about a year and a half.

One good choice might be Lake Fryer south of Perryton. I haven't been to it in quite a while, but I always liked the place. Perhaps someone who has been there recently could report on its current conditions.

I've always thought that the drive from the highway to Lake Fryer is the best part.

Palo Duro got a good fill a couple of years ago and actually had more water depth than Mededith.
I'm not sure of the water levels right now. Its been since last spring since I have been out there.
The camping area is on the back side of the dam. Its a nice area w/ a small pond, play ground area and pavilion near by. I have seen deer, turkeys and bald eagles while in the area.
In addition to Palo Duro, there is Lake Fryer/Wolf Creek park south of Perryton and Lake Marvin just north of Canadian.

Lake Marvin is really pretty and you could take him to see the dinosaur on the hill just south of Canadian.

Ochiltree county reinstated the burn ban last week. Check before you go Lake Fryer.

We went ahead and camped out Friday night at Lake Palo Duro. Set up camp on the east side of the lake below where the water level would normally be. He enjoyed it, except for the wind that kicked up after dark and blew all night long. The next morning we hiked some of the trails above and below the dam. Found a cave right off the nature walk trail that he really liked, he thought we should move in and live there. He got into picking up pieces of trash along the trails to throw away in the trash cans, so the lake is now a little cleaner than when we got there.
