No need to make a special trip for pictures. My brother still lives at Vigo Park along with my grandmother, two aunts and uncles, and my cousin over by happy. Parents are in Canyon still. So I drive by Wayside two or so times a year when I'm up for the holidays.

It's just always nice to see pics from home.

Caveman, my uncle & aunt (and since recently my grandmother) are at Vigo Park. I spent my early years there. I belong to the McMurtry/Devin clans.

Let me know if you can see these or not. Flickr permissions are a little weird sometimes.

Remember the old commercial.... "you call it corn, we call it maize"?

corn, maize, milo, and sorghum get kind of confusing to a little kid

Cool pictures by the way.

A buddy from school is a tractor doctor and he posted some pictures of a new cotton stripper on facebook. I can't recall how many rows it covered, but it had a round bailer incorporated into it and would bale the cotton as it stripped it. It was pretty slick, and if I remember correctly, it cost about $800K.

Thanks Canyon,

I loved and hated harvest. It was the end of the year and the fields were emptying, the dust and other allergies killed me, but winter and snow were around the corner.

Quail hunting, pheasant hunting, duck hunting, goose hunting. These were the good things that awaited after harvest. Not to mention night hunting for rabbit and coyote.

Growing up in the Panhandle was a blessing. So many great times and great people.

Thanks again for more pics.

I was sitting here looking at that new cotton picker. (yep, after the leaving the Panhandle I learned the difference between stripper and a picker)

I feel really old because I remember the ones when I was a kid had a shoot out the back that shot the stripped cotton into a trailer. Oddly, cotton was one of the things that we never farmed.

I never saw a cardinal or a porcupine up on the caprock....or a deer for that matter. Great pictures as always.

Canyon,

Thanks again for spending the time to post pics. Love the Palo Duro pics. Though I am currently in NE Ohio and we have had several inches of snow in the two weeks I have been here. Feels like the late 70's-early 80's back home.

Biscuit, I never saw a cardinal nor porcupine on the plains, but I got to see many of both when I moved to Clarendon.

My bird dogs over the years saw more porcupines than they should have seen.

I once saw a porcupine in the top of a tall tree at Lake Greenbelt. Strange thing was, the tree was up the river and was standing in five feet of water at least 50 yds from the nearest shore.

So we got 4-6 inches of snow in the Canyon area, and we drove out to PD Canyon to get some photos of the deep snow. Well, the park was closed, so we only got some shots of the upper end of the park.

Thanks for posting these pics Canyon. I'm a Panhandle boy too and I only get back there once a year (Thanksgiving). I have a few pics of Palo Duro, but they are not as nice as yours. Thanks again, for giving me a little window into my old stomping grounds.

I miss it, too, but I'm glad I'm not up before the roads thaw so I can put out hay in the dark at 2 degrees.

I've got some really good pictures of the Muleshoe area, specifically down by the Muleshoe National Wildlife Refuge. Beautiful country IMO. As soon as my rook status is up I'll get those up.

Oh, looky there. I'm a Pro level now

Something you don't see every day: A field of canola in the Panhandle. On the south side of Azteca road about 2 miles west of I-27, for those that know the area.

Eric, I'm glad y'all have pheasant up where you're at. I haven't been pheasant hunting in 2 years because of the diminishing numbers in Muleshoe. My grandad's place just isn't what it used to be. I used to go out 3 days a week during season and limit out by myself in 15 minutes. Man, I miss those times.
