I moved to Lubbock from FTW about 2.5 years ago. The people out here are great...some of the nicest you will ever encounter.
If you aren't used to it, spring time in Lubbock is absolutely brutal. Wind, wind, and more wind. Dust storms happen several times every spring. I'm just now getting used to it.
Fall in west Texas is awesome. Beautiful weather.
Winter is a bit more harsh than most parts of the state. But nothing too crazy.
The summer isn't as bad as other parts of the state. No humidity and a constant breeze help.
You are close enough to the mountains to make a weekend trip. Cloudcroft is about 4 hours. Ruidoso is about 4 hours. Santa Fe is about 5 and Red River/Taos are about 6.
It's cheap to live if you are coming from a major metropolitan area.
Restaurant scene was kind of meh at first but it's getting better. Then again, I came from FTW so that isn't exactly comparing apples to apples.
Can't really comment on shopping for the women folk...they have an Academy and Cavender's which is about all I need. It certainly won't be what you get in a major metro area. No Apple store for example...
Lake Alan Henry is about an hour down the road. Really nice lake just south of Post. I spend a lot of time there during the spring, summer, and fall.
Palo Duro Canyon and Caprock Canyon are cool day trips. Something different that you probably haven't seen if you are from another part of the state.
If you like to hunt, there is a lot of game in this part of the state that can't be had back east. Gaining access to land is a different story but can be done if you know the right people.
Night life is nothing special unless you are a college student. There are several good bars to have a drink if you are so inclined.
If you do end up moving to Lubbock, I'd recommend looking on the SW side of town. Stay south of the loop and west of Indiana. That seems to be the newer part of town and where all of the growth is taking place. Whatever you do, stay west of University.
