Wichita Falls Times Record News
VERNON The sale of the nation's largest contiguous ranch occurred Tuesday morning in a Vernon courtroom, bringing an end to decades of wrangling among family members over the disposition of the land.
The reported buyer of the famed Waggoner ranch is sports mogul Stan Kroenke, owner of the National Football League's Los Angeles Rams, the National Basketball Association's Denver Nuggets and National Hockey League's Colorado Avalanche.
Staley Heatly, 46th District attorney in Wilbarger County, was in the courtroom as an observer and said it appeared the ranch was sold in its entirety rather than broken up.

And so it begins. All those folks who have been leasing property around the lakes are told their leases will not renew.

Posted this story on Outdoors a few months ago, but wanted to share here after seeing this:

quote:

One of the interior walls in my grandaddy's house is really weathered looking wood planks. I'd never asked him about it until last night. I guess when old man Waggoner bought the original land in 1889, he tore down the house on the property.

They shipped the wood by wagon up to our panhandle farm, eventually built a house out of the material. In the 1960s, they ended up tearing that house down and in the 70s, they repurposed what was left for this interior wall.

He also has a mantel from an old Colorado abandoned mining camp that was built in the 1870s. They axe cut it out of pine, and though it's obvious that it was cut by axe, it's so straight it's unreal. Wish I'd spent more time asking him about the history on our farm.

Tough luck.

Frederickson writes that the residents had always assumed that they had an "understanding" with the owners.

Your understanding with the old owners does not convey to the new owner if there is not language in the contract for sale/purchase. Never make an assumption especially when dealing with something as important as your residence.
