Tyler's is great. But there is plenty of bad bbq around Amarillo

Rudy's in Amarillo and College Station is hard to beat... For a chain, they are pretty doggone reliably good!

Wesley's bean pot is my go to favorite. Tyler's is hit or miss and is not worth the price you pay. Tyler's is 50/50 on how good it is ( just my opinion). Wesley's is priced great and never had a bad meal there.

Only been to the Amarillo Rudy's once, many years ago. They were NOT up to the standards of the CS Rudy's.

Neither have I - but their uniformity makes them easy to visit wherever they have an outlet and their product is way above average IMO. If I'm travelling, and hungry, and don't know much about the area I'm in and see a Rudy's, I know generally what to expect.
In Amarillo, since my mother's home was just a hop, skip, and jump up Olson Blvd, it was easy to go there if I had a yen for BBQ.
Of course BBQ taste is to each his own, but like some other things, to me BBQ comes in three flavors - good better and best.
Personally, I like their "wet" version of brisket which many other BBQ places do not differentiate.

Oh, I'll still go to a Rudy's elsewhere, but I'm not going to a big chain in Amarillo when Tyler's is literally right down the street.

Although I may try Wesley's Bean Pot first, always happy to add more options to the list.

I can't say that I've ever had good barbq in Amarillo.

I ate there several time when my oldest brother was in the Texas State Veterans home in Amarillo recovering from a coma. I'd take his wife to Amarillo to see him a couple of times a week and she liked the place. If it were up to me, I'd have never gone back after the first visit.

It wasn't that I thought that the food was bad -- just boring. It struck me as more like lunch meat in an 8 oz plastic wrapper at the grocery store.

It could be worse. At one barbecue restaurant in the Panhandle which I won't name here, the food has gone downhill over the last several years.

The last time I ate there, the sliced brisket was well over 50% fat. There was very little meat on the plate. That could explain why they serve you chopped brisket if you don't specifically ask for sliced -- so that you won't realize how little meat there is.

If they are still around in five years, I might stop again to see if they got any better. Until then, if I want barbecue, I drive up to Guymon on Friday or Saturday night.

I ate at Evie Mae's on Friday. It was excellent as usual.

I seldom get in there when I'm in Lubbock due to the lines. I usually hit up The Shack instead, which IMO is just as good. Love their ribs.

I finally made it over to Wesley's Bean Pot to try out last Friday and definitely enjoyed the meal.

Best bbq in the panhandle is in downtown Hereford

Rusty Pit. Puts all those Amarillo places to shame.

The Aggie Catholic Student Center recently drove through with a busload of Aggies headed to Colorado on a retreat. They contacted Tylers for catering, and he comped a massive amount of food for the entire group. They had plenty for dinner, and probably another full meal or two of leftovers.

Good bull.

Tyler is good people. I can remember eating in his original spot in an old long John silvers building!

It doesn't surprise me a bit that he would do something like that.

It's five years later. I don't think that they are open at all except for catering and I'm not too sure about them even doing catering any more.

Looking at Google maps, they haven't apparently had a review of any kind in five years now.

Having been to several since the original posting I now agree with they are not up to CS for sure... The ones in OKC are simply not very good at all

Since moving two years ago, I've been to a few BBQ places in Amarillo and Canyon. My opinions:

- Tyler's is fantastic. It's not tricked up and super sweet like a lot of trendy BBQ is these days. Everything was just right. It's one of the few places I've been that lived up to the hype.
- Fat Boys in Canyon wasn't great. To be honest, it's the only Canyon restaurant I don't expect I'll ever visit again. To say that it was greasy is an understatement.
- Dyer's in Amarillo was good, but not great.
- There was a food truck in Canyon called Holey Smokes that was absolutely fantastic. It was as good as any BBQ I've ever had. Unfortunately they closed up shop and the new BBQ food truck that bought their spot is good, but not great.

And I think Rudy's in Amarillo is generally really good. I prefer their smoked turkey over any other I've had and their brisket and hot sausage is solid. My kids like it and like their desserts. You can do better than Rudy's, but all things considered I'm a big fan. If that makes me a BBQ-noob, so be it.

I haven't been to Hereford for BBQ but would like to go one of these days. If any of you other locals are interested in making the trek, I'm interested.

The original owners retired and sold out several years ago. Downhill since.

What's in Hereford?

If we are expanding out, "Weekends BBQ" in Plainview is pretty decent. They've been operating out a barn on 5th street, west of I-27 for several years. They are remodeling a new location east of I-27, on 5th street, near Quincy, I think. Have yet to open it.

Rudy's is highly variable from store to store. Went to one in ABQ a few years ago, and it was better than the one in Amarillo. That ain't right.

I'll add some to the list yall should try one of the locations as they are (were jointly owned)

Crazy Larrry's (was Doug Heinks BBQ when i was in HS but was bought out but still serves the same items).

Rudy's is a big no for me, But Tylers, and Spicy Mikes are darn good as well. Dyers hasn't been good for a while.
