Yeah yeah yeah, that's been covered already. You're wrong, too.

Those don't have to be mutually exclusive anymore, just FTR.

Well considering we just hired Jimbo, you might be waiting a while.

But to your point, even in the fran/sherman and worst Sumlin years...there weren't that many empty seats.

Still highly inadvisable.

Does an 8-hour drive to Colorado count as a plus? I can get there in half that time driving to IAH from CS and taking a flight to Colorado.

You can't get from your driveway in C/S to any ski slope in Colorado in 4 hours

1.5 hours to Bush
1 hour park/security/bags
2.5 hour flight to Denver
.5 to get bags and car
1.5 hours to ski resort

And that is BEST case scenario

Lubbock to Ruidoso is a 4 hour drive
To Santa Fe ... 5
To Red River ... 6
To Taos ... 6
To Wolf Creek, Colo. Ski ... 7.5
To Durango, Colo. ski .... 8

And that's in a car, driveway to driveway, no flight hassle
College Station to the Guadalupe is a 2.5 hour drive
To the Comal....2.5
To the Frio....4
To the Lllano....3
To the Nueces....4
To POC....3.5
To Matagorda...3
To South Padre...6.5
To New Orleans...7

And that's in a car, driveway to driveway, no flight hassle

Lubbock is pretty dang nice if you lower your bar a little bit.

Tech reminds me of Harvard (of the plains)
Nearby towns like Levelland remind me of charming Irish hamlets
The nearest skiing at Ski Apache reminds me of Gstaad Switzerland
Dining near west loop of 289 reminds of restaurants in Napa valley like Farmstead and French Laundry
The smells around the city remind me of the aromas in the Swiss alps
The venereal diseases remind me of Derek Jeter.

I will say the Overton/Broadway area adjacent to Tech's University Ave. absolutely blows A&M's Northgate out of the water

No comparison

If it's such a great place why don't they have top 10 recruiting classes every year, or for that matter top 20? we seem to be in that mix regularly and have been for many many years.

In fact I wonder when is the last time Tceh had a better recruiting class than A&M...

Incorrect. The former "Tech Ghetto" east of the stadium has been completely transformed. Really nice apartment complexes as far as you can see, Overton Hotel, etc. It's a nice area. It is however, completely void of any retail shopping. There are some restaurants down there, but not many due to the seasonality of that area when the students are gone. My favorite restaurants down in that area are easily Blue Sky Texas and Jazz. Neither are on University Avenue.

Tech has done a lot to improve their campus and the area around it. The architecture of their new buildings starting more than a decade back is beautiful. Much nicer than ours.

Again, it's a good town, and Tech is improving and growing every year. I just hate the spring weather here, and the flat, dusty land. It's like we are in between. It's not a desert, but certainly not an area with much green, trees, lakes and rivers, etc. In other words, not pretty at all......but a good town with good people.

Well, given that A&M is a 60,000 student university with world-recognized academics and nationally recognized athletics and has been around for over 150 years v. a school of less than 40,000 that's been around for less than 100 years and only just beginning to be recognized athletically or academically, not really a valid comparison.

While I don't agree, the idea that B/CS is right in the middle of a triangle that puts it close to all 4 major cities in TX is a big advantage culturally for any recruit that wants to travel home. Lubbock can only say they are near D/FW, but not really even that.

That is an advantage, but not a huge one, otherwise A&M wouldn't be able to recruit nationally.

I love A&M.
I hate Tech.
Last night I turned on their game for about 2 minutes, saw how good Tech was playing and how juiced their crowd was and said to myself, "damn, I wish we had that".
Then I turned it off.

Being right in the middle of those 4 major cities is a huge advantage. Do we take full advantage of it? As far as recruiting nationally goes, we aren't some national recruiting powerhouse. We could be but aren't currently.

Lots of TX kids on both rosters, more from outside TX on A&Ms roster.

I say it's the school itself (size, ranking, traditions) than proximity to the big cities that makes the difference.

The differenxe between Austin and a modernized college town 90 minutes from Houston is smaller than the difference between the latter and somewhere forever away from civilization imo.

If you prefer those things, that's a plus

The beach for sure

I don't care about going to the beach

As for the rivers, Lubbock is only 30 miles further to the South Llano than College Station, and the South Llano is the only part of the Llano worth visiting

Lubbock is about 30-40 minutes difference to Leakey compared to College Station

So not a huge plus for College Station with regard to the South Llano and Frio

I don't care about the rest. I have ZERO desire to float the Guadalupe or Comal. Got that out of my system LOOOOONG ago

I like mountains much more than beaches

Some might say that kids don't pick a college based on location... I think many do and I think tu has a distinct advantage based on where they are... along with a national brand (as much as I hate to say it) which makes it surprising that they consistently under-perform given those advantages. Some will pick a powerhouse despite location (Columbus / Tuscaloosa). Austin, being the sanctuary / blue-berry that it is probably turns some off.

I keep seeing stuff like this, but really, who cares?

Did y'all go to Houston, Dallas, or Austin every weekend when y'all were in school?

I know I didn't

I drove into College Station in August, and pretty much just stayed there until Thanksgiving. And if the sips were in town, I sometimes didn't even go home for Thanksgiving. Then I'd come back, and stay until Christmas break. In the spring, I left town for spring break, and that was pretty much it. I always had stuff going on in College Station that I did not want to miss.

I hardly ever left town on a weekend. I had no need to go to Houston or Dallas when I was in school. So remoteness would be pretty meaningless to me

I did go skiing over Christmas and spring break, however. And being 7 1/2 hours closer to the slopes would have been a hell of a lot better

Bengal fans never drunkenly stormed the field against A&M and shoved the goal posts into the stands filled with A&M fans, bloodying one of our chancellors.

This was a good natured back and forth, but some of you West Texans have been spending way too much time with these Tech hooligans on the plains.

I'll give you the goalpost thing, but the chancellor was struck by another Aggie. Remember all the "Aggie-on-Aggie violence" talk?

And I'm not defending Tech, even though I work here, so much as I'm defending Lubbock when I've lived (for all but 4 semesters) for over 50 years.
