I may be moving to Lubbock next year for law school and was wondering about the various areas of Lubbock. Are there any places I should stay away from?

I am looking for an efficiency or a 1 bdrm. Any recommendations?

The Tech Terrace area is real nice, lots of college students live in that area. Walking distance to the campus. Basically the Tech Terrace area is 4th Street (South) to 34th Street (North) and University Ave. (East) to Indiana Ave. (West). There are two parks and a nice local supermarket and coffee shop. Lots of Doctors (close to Covenant Hospital) and professionals live there.

Thanks for the suggestion. I'll definitely look there.

I don't really want to be surrounded by undergrads just cause I think they will probably be pretty loud (when I have to study) and they may not like the fact that I'm an Aggie.

Go over to Raiderpower.com

http://texastech.scout.com/index.html

Go to the message boards and post the question. I would suggest the "Raider Alley" forum. Be polite, expect a lot of good-natured kidding plus the occassional jack@$$. Ignore the jerks, and several of the decent folks will be willing to help.

You might also try the Rivalries board here, as several Raiders hang out there. Also the B&P board, I believe there are some Tech law school grads there.

In general, Lubbock is a nice enough place. The worst time is the March sandstorms, but you'll probably enjoy the more moderate summers and the lower humidity. The wide open skies and sunsets are great. Aside from the too numerous reform school dropouts who attend tech, there are nice people there, and West Texans in general are very friendly.

I understand there is a huge group of Ags at Tech Law, so get in the network. In fact, there is an Aggie Bar Association web site, I'd bet someone there would have some ideas:

It depends on how much you are willing to spend. There are some very nice new condos/apartment that were built after they tore down the slums east of campus.

If you want something more affordable, there are several new apartments west of campus. My neice looked at one about a year ago, brand new, single story apartments. They are located west of the loop near Milwaukee/19th St.

Stay to the west, it is much safer.

EMY is correct. If the house/apt. is adjacent to an avenue with a letter in its title (Avenue X, Avenue Q, Avenue A, etc.), look elsewhere.

I hope I wasn't being led like a lamb to the slaughter on that Raider board...

but I posted there anyways...

I'll agree with Canyon that there are some good folks on Raiderpower. There are a few jerks that look for any opportunity to attack A&M (HubOfOurPains is the ringleader). A lot of them like to entertain themselves at our expense, but most of it is harmless when taken with a grain of salt, and there are a lot of good West Texas people in the mix over there. If you go over there and start trashing Tech and acting like an idiot Aggie, you deserve what you get, IMHO. But if you're polite and respectful, just like you would be going into another man's house, then they'll treat you fine.

I always like what you have to say, West! Good luck on Tech!

Have you heard anything yet?

Not yet. The buddy of Scw0530 and myself that got the full-ride to both Baylor and Tech heard from Tech on Thursday, and he was about 3-4 weeks ahead of me in the application process, so I'm hoping about a month away.

It also crossed my mind that they've been trying to get all the early decision stuff done by the guaranteed deadline, and I know I was in line behind them. But they should be finishing that up now, so I'm hoping it might speed up the timetable for us regular decision folks.

Just don't go East of University and you will be fine.

Personally, speaking as a Tech law grad, I'd look for a place in Waco if you can get it.

Wherever you end up, you should seriously consider buying a house instead of renting. I owned my house on the far Southwest side of Lubbock, and ended up making money when I left.

Suzy,
I'm a 2L at Tech law, and I don't agree you should be looking at Baylor or Waco. One of myh best friends is in school there, and its a truly awful experience, and Waco SUCKS. The premium you pay is NOT worth it over Texas Tech, trust me. Do well here, and you'll have a good pick of opportunities I assure you. Also, this is a very very friendly place, and relative to law schools, I don't think it gets much better in that regard. If you'd like some help with places to consider living, I'd be glad to help you. I will also tell you that the Aggie Bar here at Tech law is HUGE, and you will not feel one bit out of place. Post your email if you'd like some help.

I was actually just kidding, I have no regrets about choosing Tech for law school. But, Waco definitely does not suck, especially when compared to Lubbock.

I'm glad to hear the Aggie Bar Association is still going strong. That's one thing Tech Law has over every other school, the Aggie Bar Association is much more active.

The water in Waco tastes like crap.

And Lubbock is MUCH better to live in than Waco. Less crime, more pretty girls, more fun college town.

You mention Waco water, but Lubbock water is notorious for giving long-time citizens brown teeth. And what about the mud storms you're about to experience? They weren't bad your first year up there, but that won't last. I'll admit that Lubbock is probably a better college town, but having the highest STD rate in the country tends to affect my perception of Lubbock as a college town.

Look, I've lived in both towns and Waco is a MUCH nicer place to live, especially for an Aggie. The area around BU and I-35 is slummy, but West and South Waco are very nice and beautiful. Plus, you can be in Dallas, Austin or College Station in an hour and fifteen minutes. You have to drive that far just to get beer in Lubbock. Plus, Waco firms pay a lot more than Lubbock firms, if you want to take that into account.

It's not worth the higher tuition, though, I'll give you that.

Glad to see this thread getting some more action. Buying a place in Waco is out of the picture now, seeing as I just got rejected! I'm pretty excited about Tech. I've been hearing good things from a lot of different people. When I visited over the A&M game weekend, I was very impressed and suprised by the friendliness. The level of 'Aggieness' is great!!

you can email me at _________

Who's asking?

SuzyQ, you'll enjoy your time in Lubbock, if that's the path you choose. Lucky for you, A&M is going to be superior to Tech in most every sport while you're there and you won't catch as much hell as those of us who were there during the lean years of RC, Melvin, Gillom and Johnson.

Things are good. Made Law Review (which sucks, actually), and clerking at Crenshaw, Dupree & Milam for the first half, still working on the second half...hopefully something will work out. How's the job down there? How's the woman and little girl?

Crenshaw's a good firm. Where else are you interested in for the second half? Have you looked into the AG? They can always use clerks, and you can get course credit.

Things down here are going great, thanks for asking. Shoot me an e-mail if I can ever be of any help: (my last name)@nhsl.com

Edited to try to avoid spam mail.

maybe yall can help me with this. There are two open house type events that I can attend at Tech Law. The one on Mar. 3 is for scholarship recipients while the one on Ap. 1 is for all accepted students? The Dean of Admissions said he would fly me out to one if I could get myself to the other. Whichever one I drive to, I will be bringing a friend.

So my question is this: which one would would be the most accomodating as far as bringing him? I don't really want to leave him out in the cold while I go off and do law stuff, but he does have friend out there that I'm sure he'll want to hang out with. Advice?

From what i hear, the scholarship one is more formal while the April one is very casual and laid back.

I'd take your friend to the one that is for everyone. It's more laid-back and social, and there will be more people there. But, that's just my opinion and I can't say I remember much about either one, other than skipping the chili cook-off to look for housing.

Is Dean Cook still the Dean of Admissions? He's an Aggie.

Drive to 4/1. Bring friend to 4/1. But attend both.

I just got back from Lubbock. The way things worked out, my friend went with me this time. Oh well.

I looked at a few apartments also. I really liked the Sagewood off of 67th and Frankford. Anyone have any comments on it? I liked it enough to want to sign something soon. Rent should be around $465 for 750 sq. ft.

Not familiar with that place in particular, but the southwest and west parts of town are generally a little nicer than the north and east parts of town.

It's a pretty good hop from there to campus, but it's not bad.

Look into Summerplace & summertime apartments. 2 bedrooms with a backyard for low 500s. Much bigger than Sagewood.
