I'm in the process of looking for jobs up in that area - I'll be graduating in December. I'd like a crop consulting/IPM/research position. If you hear of anything, would you mind letting me know?

(Extension Agent - IPM job in Dumas open now, applying for it as well)

I will, though I'm not real connected to that end of things....

I assume you've checked with the Experiment Station in Bushland, both on the A&M and USDA sides? It is a joint station.

Any certain town, or are you just looking in the Panhandle in general?

Panhandle in general.

And yes I check greatjobs.tamu.edu about every other day. I'm not real worried yet - I've still got a few months to go before I can start panicking.

You missed half of what I was saying....the greatjobs.tamu.edu site only covers A&M jobs. Have you been looking at USDA as well? They may have ento type jobs at Bushland, and those will not show up on the A&M site.

Also, are there any decent jobs with the Boll Weevil Eradication folks?

AgBugChick,

USDA-ARS at Bushland doesn't do ento stuff any more. http://www.afm.ars.usda.gov/hrd/jobs/index.htm#vacancy

We currently have one Engineering Scientist position open [usually needs a Ph.D.]; a soon to be announced Project Manager position and two Post Docs [2 ys]; and a future technician position [may be 6-8 months until announced].

Dr. Michels, Jr. http://amarillo.tamu.edu/~jmichels/ with TAMU at Amarillo will know about the ento jobs and IPM stuff.

When I worked there, the USDA entomology work was conducted at the USDA complex on F&B road in good old College Station USA. This would have been USDA, Agricultural Research Service, Southern Plains Area, or in govspeak "USDA ARS SPA VTERL"

I worked as a student tech "bug wrangler" raising colonies of beneficial insects. Most of the work dealt with veterinary emtomology and toxicology with hornflies, ticks, etc.

The introduction of Ivermectin cattle treatments killed off most of our dung-living beneficial insects as well as the flies.

Spider69...

Are you at Bushland now? I worked there in 1982-1984 as a Tech for Reggie Jones. At that time, there was a little ento work, mainly with the sunflower guy.

Kreese-

I love Canyon...if you want a house and 10, all it takes is $$$$$$$$. If you have specific questions, fire away.

I understood, I just left out the part about the USDA. Our advisor sends out weekly emails that includes USDA openings throughout the nation.

I worked on F&B road, as well, in 2002.

I was hoping you guys could give me different leads other than USDA and TAMU - oh well! Thanks though

They are throwing in subdivisions as fast as they can go all over northern Randall County. I guess it depends on what you mean by "preserve".

Some of the new developments are setting aside greenbelt areas, but the only "preserves" would be near Buffalo Lake NWR (where there is "0" development) and PD Canyon SP. There is an old gated community called "Sunday Canyon" that is very close to, if not bordering on PDCSP. And the county commissioners just approved a new development close to Sunday Canyon, so perhaps that is what you have heard about.

I have a friend who is selling 20 acre plots (I think) about 6 miles south of Canyon, and is restricting the deeds pretty closely. I could find out more if you wish. It is on gently rolling rangeland, but nowhere near PD Canyon.

Thanks for the reply, Canyon. I'd appreciate more information on the plots, if you don't mind.

Sorry, looks like I'm behind the power curve. My friend sold a few spots, then sold the remainder in a block. But they told me they'd keep their ears open.

There are several developments and plots of land around. If you can't find what you want online, I'll shoot you the name of local realtors.

I'd also be glad to throw in my 2 cents on schools, neighborhoods, etc.

If you don't mind me being nosy, what would be bringing you this way? And do you have any kids that are great athletes?

CanyonAg77,

I transferred to Bushland in 1983. You must know me. How many Ags are there now (2-4) with ARS.

Sensei,

Yes, I know Calvin and he's a great guy. Works for TAMU at the Lubbock station.

AgBugChick,

Check with Dr. Greta Schuster http://www.wtamu.edu/academic/anns/ag/faculty.htm or Dr. Bonnie Pendleton with WTAMU. Dr. Schuster has great private industrty contacts with IPM types in this area.

I was wondering if you have checked with the commodity groups? Folks like Plains Cotton Co-op, or Texas Corn Growers might have a good idea who is doing ento work in the Panhandle.

Spider69-

Between the Bushland directory and the Former Students directory, I have a good idea who you are (Dr. H), and remember you coming on board at Bushland. As I said, I was Reggie Jones's tech, first name Dean.

When I was there, the A&M contingent was Paul Unger, Arlen Schnieder, Tom Marek, and yourself, plus others at the A&M station in town and probably others who have slipped my mind in the interim.

I shared an office in the west wing with techs Jerry (Williams?), Steve (?), and Dale Hollingsworth. All of us have moved on, but it surprises me how many of the staff are still there. It also surprises me that I have forgotten so many names in 20 years.

CanyonAg,

You nailed me. Anytime I can help you on any irrigation things, besides setting pipe, let me know. I still work some with Reggie and Thomas, if we aren't golfing or hunting. Everybody else is retired except Grant J., Larry F., and Jim C. Where's your place from Canyon? Do you know the Vincent's out on FM 2219 out by RC Feedyard?

Thanks S69...Heath Vincent is a freshman at A&M and a high school classmate of my son. My son is a fish in C-2. My daughter is a Jr. in CHS.

The main land I work is the city of Canyon's wastewater treatment farm south of Canyon near Hungate road.

They are not interested in effeciency with their pivots. As far as they are concerned, the more ineffecient the better, since all they care about is getting rid of water.

CanyonAg,

Heath must be Todd's kid. I know Brian better. Thomas M. and I hunt doves on the Vincent Farm. Brian's wife and my oldest son were friends and classmates at AHS. My older son was '92 from A&M [TexasToast92 on here]. He has a Ph.D. from Wisc. and works in Tenn. My daughter, '94, is a RN in Austin. My youngest son was in D-2 [Dogs] '01. Bonfire in '99 messed him up his junior yr after making RVs. He's in Austin working, but likely will not finish college until he gets his stuff together [he's doing alright now but has a ways to go].
