and so as not to clutter up the travel to Dumas thread, then we've got to have a wheatie thread.

Someone mentioned Irish wheaties. The last few years, some of the Kansas guys brought workers from Brazil and South Africa to my neck of the woods. It's certainly quite a sight when the South Africans go walking down the main drag from the RV park to Pizza Hut and Sonic wearing shorts and boots.

I knew some from New Zealand. They were fun. (posted on the other thread before I saw this one, sorry!)

My cousins have a dairy over in Mississippi. I guess they ran off all the locals and have had to import help from places like South Africa, El Salvador, and Europe.

So people won't have to go look up what you are talking about:

Burd's a 'wheaty'!!!

I think the funniest group of wheaties I have met were a group of kids from Ireland - (insert Irish accent)

So where did you start/finish?

Many, many moons ago, my Granddad used to run a crew that would start down near the Coastal Bend and move up 83 all the way to Canada - he said there were times they would be cutting in Canada and it would be snowing!

Most of us were college kids so we were limited by the school year. The guy that owned the crew was also a school teacher. I think he may have just retired this year. Cost of equipment, fuel, and labor were going through the roof.

We started in Seymour, TX, stopped in Texhoma, Tribune, KS, Ogalalla, NE, and and finished in Martin, SD.

I knew some wheaties when I was up there - they did corn, though, do you call them cornies? Anyways, they were from New Zealand. They were fun times. Drink like freaking fish, though!

While there were some corn custom harvesters where I grew up - the majority of the custom harvesters came through during wheat harvest - they were the ones that were true class acts !!

Although I am sure there are now more corn custom harvesters up there - since there is more corn acreage now. But, it seemed when I was growing up that most of the custom harvesting on corn was done by neighbors with machines - b/c the harvest was a longer time period and the threat of hail storms was significantly less!

The guy I worked for has a corn and milo crew too that made a fall run in Texhoma, same farmers as during the summer for wheat harvest.
