I'll be re-locating to the area in approx 1 month. Does any one have any leads on jobs for a graduate with a degree in Biology in the Perryton area?

Thanks in advance.

Hmmm, I'm guessing you have pretty compelling reasons to move up there without a job, like a spouse's job????

There are some Perryton area folks on the forum occassionally: p-townag, croakies, meatball....perhaps they will chime in.

Off the top of my head, I can't think of anything you probably have already considered: Ag extension, science teacher, entomology consulting,...

The only big industry that I know of is the hog farms.

I'd expand my job search out to places like Canadian and Guymon.

Good luck.

My job is transferring me. My future wife is the one looking for a job. She won't be moving up there for a few months, but I thought I'd start helping her look now. We're willing to live as far as an hour away. So a job in Amarillo is a possibility.

I'm guessing it's more like 1.5 hours or more from Perryton to Amarillo, and there are a few days in the winter when you really don't want to drive those roads.

The trouble is that there are not a lot of nice places to live between Perryton and Amarillo, if you wanted to split the difference. And as you are figuring out, not a lot of jobs.

I wonder if there are any jobs with the National Park Service at Lake Meredith or the Alibates Quarry? The Pantex weapons plant has a limited need for natural science types in their enviromental department. I think there are USDA experiment stations at Guymon & Woodward Oklahoma.

And as far as places to live, drive over to Canadian. It has always struck me as a pretty town.

Too bad you haven't been married a while...for a couple ready to have kids, a wife who can't find a decent job could transition to stay at home mom.

To dovetail in with Canyon's recommendations to check with the USDA experiment stations, it might not hurt to check with the USDA county offices, and see if the NRCS or the FSA is looking for someone of her qualifications.

Also, don't forget the Texas Agricultural Experiment Station's Amarillo research and extension center.

Thanks for the help, guys. Like I said, she is looking but not moving up until after we get married in July. I figured there was some USDA stuff up there, but wasn't sure.

There is a chemical plant in Pampa which is an hour from Perryton. She has a contact there and will use that as a resource as well.

As far as Canadian goes, I've been through there a few times my self and have considered that as an option. It does seem like a pretty nice town.

Once again, thanks, and if you think of anything else, please let me know.

Edit- Re: the stay at home mom/housewife, that is a definite possiblility that has been discussed. We're still negotiating that deal.

A Professor of Biology at Baylor lives in Gruver. I don't think he spends much time in Waco.

He used to have a lab in Gruver. I don't know that he had any employees or if he has an active lab now.

I'm sure there are a few high schools that would accomodate a graduate degree in biology if she wanted to transition to teacher.

The NRCS might have a county office as well. Pantex would be difficult to get into without some help as it is a DOE federal job.

I would also agree with Canyon that she likely would not like to drive that drive to Amarillo every day.

You might also check some of the petroleum companies in the Borger area and see if they need a biologist.

The contractor BWXT runs Pantex. They hire all the time. The closest thing they have right now though is a chem lab tech opening.

Hunter-

I don't know if you have ever lived up there or not, but last Sunday it was 11 degrees when I woke up and the wind was blowing 20+ mph. I was 3 hours or more South of Perryton. I had forgotten what cold was.

But I will tell you that there is not any finer people in the world than Panhandle people. No where in the world. NO WHERE!

Killer K is right. As a friend of mine from San Antonio once commented about the greater West Texas, "it may not be the greatest place to visit, but it's sure a great place to live".

It's not Hawaii, California, or the Caribbean, but I've been to all those places, and for living all the time, I'd much rather be right here. The people just can't be beat.

As for the weather, it's great for the most part. But there are times when it's bitterly cold, so hot that the wind feels like a blast furnace, or the sand is blowing at 50 mph, and in those times, you feel like you've accomplished something just by living through the day. And I gotta be honest, sometimes that's a pretty cool feeling.

I remember one summer in Childress there were 42 days that were over 110 degrees. One day was 119 and the wind blew 20 mph from the South. It was not a cool breeze.

Then that winter we had 10 days that it never got above freezing and each night went below 10 degrees.

It is definitely the land of extremes.

I have always believed that is why the people are so great, you really need each other to survive.

Hunter you are moving to a wonderful part of the world.

There is an upside to the weather. The summer nights are wonderful. Especially in Perryton. I have worn a jacket while cooking steaks in July.

Except two years ago when I actually went home to Clarendon for Christmas and we received a dusting of snow. We left the Victoria area and they recieved a record 12" for Christmas.

But that was a 100 years snow for that region.

Killer-K....I just left Victoria to move to Canyon. I missed the wonderful South Texas White Christmas to visit my family in the Panhandle as well. As for any job with Texas Cooperative Extension you might want to check http://greatjobs.tamu.edu and they have all the postings. Good Luck!

There is a lot of acivity in the oil field as well. Not that your wife wants to work as a rough neck but enviromental science may be worth looking into. A lot of companies are out of Pampa. The swine industry may be a good place to look. If she has any agriculture experience, a job as a drug rep may be an option as there are ranches, feedyards, and diaries going in up there too. I believe that Clarendon College has a campus in Perryton.
