SAVE TEX RANDALL!!!

I'm assuming the poor guy hasn't fallen apart yet. We pass through Canyon 2-3 times a year, and each time ol' Tex seems to be in worse shape ...

quote:
A long period of deterioration was worsened when a semi crashed into his left boot, and the cigarette was shot out of his hand. Local businesses rallied during a "Save the Cowboy" campaign and contributed to a restoration in 1987. The work was completed in 1989.

A spur replaced the cigarette, in deference to today's health-conscious tourists.

From the appearance of Tex up close, another makeover is about due. He's a little chipped and sun-worn. Large open wounds on his legs may be the result of desperate souvenir seekers.

I heard he was going to be fixed up and relocated to Big Earl's, but apparently that hasn't happened yet ...

Big Earl's is already out of business.

"Tex Randal" is pretty ugly. I'm not going to be sad if he were to go away.

Are you kidding? As long as that's been there it deserved to stay. Especially if it annoys locals.

I remember seeing that when I was a li'l tot.

Hey it's chintzy enough, why doesn't someone con Big Texan into buying it?

Or if you're going to get rid of him, send him off in a blaze of glory. Wrap him from head to toe in a few thousand feet of Primer Cord, and sell tickets for the right to push down on the detonator to blast him to bits. It would make an excellent fundraiser.

Big Earl's was in a lousy location. During the first few weeks, their food and service sucked. By the time they fixed it, it was too late, and it died.

I have been told it is too expensive to fix him. That is why Big Earl's ended up with a windmill instead. I remember all the times as akid I knew the sight of him meant we were getting close to my aunt and uncle's house.

I know the guy who bought him (and was also the owner of Big Earl's). It'll be a couple of weeks before I see him but I'll try to get some specifics about his future plans for Tex.

I talked to my friend who owns Tex and, as stated above, the plan was to renovate Tex and move him to Big Earl's. Since Big Earl's has failed to make a go of it money is, obviously, tight right now. So, for the forseeable future, Tex will stay right where he is.

They are talking about putting another restaurant where Big Earl's was and if it goes well they may move Tex there at some point.

Moving him is an incredibly big job as you might imagine. There are people who do such things but it is expensive and there is no guarantee that Tex won't break badly during some phase of the move.

Compounding the problem is that they need 17 feet of overhead clearance along the route. There are 300 utility lines that are out of city code along the route that would have to be taken down temporarily for Tex to make the trip. My friend may have been exaggerating when he said 300 but that is the number he gave.

Bottom line: Tex isn't going anywhere real soon.
