Need some help. Going up to Lubbock to visit my mom and I want to turn this into a girl's weekend. Are there any weekend getaways within driving distance of Lubbock?

Seriously, are you looking for a spa or a museum? Scenery or Bass fishing? Bed and Breakfast or primitive camping? All adult females, or with children and/or husbands? Shopping or hiking?

It is just my mom and I (I am late twenties and she is mid 50s). I think a spa/B&B is the way to go, with day trips to parks or cute shopping towns. As for distance, ~ 2 hours or so.

I know I can do this in the hill country, which is where I live, but is it going to be possible around Lubbock?

I'm afraid you're dealing mainly with a bunch of guys, who wouldn't know a cute shopping town if it bit us on our cyber-butts.

The only thing that quickly comes to mind is Post, Texas. They have a trade day the first weekend of every month in an old textile mill, and a B&B in the old Hotel Garza.

Two hours north, Amarillo has some B&Bs and even a spa (I think). I'd just do an Internet search for what you're after. Beyond the usual chain store shopping at the mall, there are a wad of antique stores along old Route 66 in an area known as Sixth Street. Supposedly there are over 100 antique and specialty stores.

It's over the 2 hour limit, but Memphis has a good little square with some cute shops. And a tea room. Clarendon has a couple of cute shops. There's not a lot that is really quaint about the west side of the Panhandle. And PB got it right about going someplace worth going even if it's more than 2 hours away. You're in the Panhandle, even Wal-Mart is at least an hour away for most people.

So if we go further than 2 hours, where would we go?

Ruidoso, Albuquerque, Santa Fe

Carlsbad Caverns, Palo Duro Canyon...

I'd stop at the canyon for sure. And Caprock State Park. It's indescribable.
