Whoop. Coach Blair made a comment the other day that Houston produced the best female ball players in the state. I don't think he's ever seen Panhandle girls play ball.

Lekner, not to discredit either of those teams but they are 1A and 3A

and those teams regularly whup up on schools that are much larger...

there have been some years where all of the state champions came out of the south plains/panhandle area....and that entire area has nowhere near the population of Dallas or Houston...

it is my understanding that in my parents day, the 50's, they let the champions from different classifications play...the big schools decided to quit doing it because the smaller schools would win too often....maybe fossilag or another poster who lived in this era could verify....

I don't think the big schools played girls BB "back in the day". I know my wife's school, Spring Woods High in Houston, did not have it, though my mom played ball for a little high school in West Texas.

And true to form, my Sunday Houston (expletive deleted) Chronicle all but ignored the Canyon and Nazareth state titles ... I think they ran a tiny line score box on the Canyon game, at least ...

Canyon and Nazareth are amazing, what the girls from those schools do is equal to, if not better, than anything on Odessa Permian or Southlake Carroll's football resume.

Canyon girls have also won at least 8 state Cross Country titles, including a run of 5 years several years back, when basketball coach Joe Lombard was coaching cross country, too, and have won 3 out of the last 4 years.

My daughter's CHS soccer team made it to the final 16 of the 4A playoffs last year. There is no 3A soccer system, so the girls have to play up a classification.

They were the last 3A team left in the 4A playoffs in 2006, so we joke that the girls won the mythical 3A state championship that year.

A lot of history in girls basketball resides in those two schools (Canyon and Nazareth). Girls high school basketball legend Joe Lombard has coached at both of them and seen his fair share of the numerous titles the two schools hold (the shools have 31 titles together). Hopefully the Swifts of Naz will repeat this week. Here are 2 great articles about the Nazareth girls program and Nazareth, in general, written and released by ESPN.com recently.

They may be small schools, but they play basketball. And some of the crap they put on the floor and call basketball in the Houston area is not basketball.

Nazareth boys grabbed a title of their own in roundball. Excellent.
