Military and aviation history once part of the English Field Air & Space Museum is being dismantled and shipped off as the museum shuts down.

What a shame. Even more of a shame was how few people even knew it was there.

The end of the article was even more disturbing. They're kicking them out, tearing those historic buildings down... but they have no plans to use the space for anything??? Can someone down there shed a little more light on what's going on?

For the next couple months, historical society members will be organizing materials, making sure they are shipped off to the correct owners. The group has to be moved out by October when its lease with the city is up.

"It's just sad it all comes to this," said Jack Casey , a director with the historical society. "You walk into this place, you are talking history ... It's just a mixed buy of whatever."

Casey said when the city told them it would not approve another lease agreement and that all the buildings at English Field would be torn down. Amarillo Asst. City Manager Jarrett Atkinson said the city does not currently have any plans for the space occupied by Texas Aviation Historical Society.

Edited because I keep forgetting TexAgs has to have links phBB tagged.

They had a few cool displays, but not a lot, and they weren't on the main tourist route, so I guess this is not a big surprise.

I don't know why the city wants to kick them out, though. And I don't know why they want to trash the buildings. One includes the old Amarillo Air Terminal, you'd think think that would have some significance.

The old terminal does have asbestos in it, perhaps the city would rather demolish it than clean up the asbestos.

Google Maps link

The old terminal is toward the bottom of the page. Zoom out to see the location on the NW corner of the old Amarillo Air Base/Present Amarillo Air Port.

Sorry to hear that.

My first (commercial) flight was out of the old Amarillo Air Terminal at English Field, on Continental Airlines, riding on one of these

It makes me think they do have something in mind though, because they've been tearing down just about all of the old AFB buildings, too. I was there March 2006 and took a bunch of shots and thought how cool it was the old style AFB street signs were still up. When I took my son there last December, 2/3 of the buildings I had photo'd were gone and all the signs had been changed over to the "standard". I can see why that stuff had to go, but it's still a bit sad. Would have liked to gotten my hands on one of those old signs if I had known they were getting yanked, too. Or one of the old building ID signs. <sigh> I guess I've officially bumped over the hill - I'm lamenting "progress" heh
