Right now if all keeps going as it is right now our elevator and farm will have its biggest wheat harvest ever. Yields are anywhere from 37 (hail damage of 40%) to 77 on dryland as of right now.

Two days ago we took in 150,000 bushels of wheat in one day. 166 loads.

That is amazing. My father's dryland wheat was projected to make around 40 bushels an acre, but the only problem is that it is still out in the field due to it being too wet to get the combines in there. Quite a bit of the seed is sproutin in the heads. It looks like we are just goin to have to plow it under. It has been ready to harvest since May 20.

reminds me of a story my grandmother used to tell. They thought they were going to bring in a crop of 50 bushel dryland wheat one year and got hail before they got it out of the field. I don't know of an occupation with more at risk than farming. Best of luck to you guys.

Our farm has hit 63 bushels on dryland southeast of Spearman. The 77 bushel dryland was south of Gruver and have heard of some "suspect" 80 totals over near Perryton.

We are still 2 weeks from finishing in the area so continue to pray for all of these farmers that they get this crop out in time.

Find a feedlot that will take that sprouted wheat before you plow it up. Some wheat has some IDK (insect damaged kernels) and they are taking some of that in for feed.

what is a normal "good" crop up there, we were happy to get 20+ bushels

Things are looking pretty good all around with some exceptions. I've talked to some around Portales with 40 bu dryland, 55 bu dryland in Keyes, OK, and up to 60 bu dryland north of Lamar, CO.

I'm thrilled to see the market run up today (currently at $5.97 up 29). Perfect timing and it should hold up as Canada joined the ranks of countries concerned with lower production. Of course, the report on Friday will be big.

Just got off the phone with another contact from the OK panhandle - he averaged 70.1 bu yesterday!

Not sure about specific bu/ac returns down here on the southern edge of wheat country, but our local co-op/grain elevator has already passed the previous record of 1.2 million bushels and there's still more in the field.

Just got off the phone with family - average around Perryton is about 50-60bu.

Big difference in the fields that were sprayed for rust vs. the ones that weren't.

One of our customers made 84bu on one of his fields yesterday. Have another FOF and customer that made over 80bu as well. Lots of reports of 70+bu.

My Dad is finished cutting yesterday and his made over 60bu. - not exactly sure yet...

Amazing what a little bit of water will do to that fertile soil up there!!!

Times have sure changed.

Gary Evans, our local sheriff, told me that many years ago, the grain elevator in Gruver would shut down at midnight on Saturday night, stayed closed all day Sunday, and then reopened at midnight Sunday night.

You picked a good year for it. Prices have been great so far.

Update: know of a Perryton farmer (acres east and south of town) that has cut over 700 acres so far: average = 82bu!!

700 acres x 80 bu. x $5 = $280,000!

$280,000 sounds like a lot, but how much did he have in that crop? Did he buy a new combine this year? See, that is what a lot of people don't understand about farming. It looks like you made a lot of money, but you have to pay back all the people you owe. My dad quit farming 5 years ago because he was tired of borrowing 1/2 a million and at the end of the year only make $50,000 in profit.

In that CanyonAg is a farmer, I imagine he's fully aware of the input costs that come along with a wheat crop. If he's like me, though, he probably just wanted the chance to stare at a big revenue number like that.

Damn right. I've gotten awfully tired of staring at numbers like:

700 acres x 5 bushels per acre x $3 a bushel = $10,500

If these guys aren't making a bundle at 50 - 80 bushles per acre and $4-$5 per bushel, they wouldn't be farming after all the 8 to 15 bushel per acre years. They would be broke and out of the business. I imagine most all of us are very happy that they are finally going to make a decent amount of money for all the hard work and years of crap they've had to put up with.

Get that crop out of the field, boys.

Wheat hasn't been a profitable crop the last couple of years. Its been a profitable forrage for us with our cows and calves.

This year we raised 1500 head of stockers on our wheat. Grazed some cows on some and are going to have cut 3500 acres of wheat when its over and probably average over 50 bushels on that 3500. Its going to be a big haul but we have some new equipment costs but its going to be a good money maker.

Sweet, I'm glad for you guys. Farming ought to be a better business than it has been for many years. Hopefully the increased demand for corn will help keep other grain prices up and make the business more stable/profitable. Too many kids like me saw no opportunity and fled the life for the concrete jungle.

It's sickening to see the time, money, and effort of a years work go down the tubes because a hail storm hit just before harvest or when the prices crash just as harvest begins.

Outstanding! In all my years at Dumas I can remember my producers being happy to hit 20 bu dryland, and 40 was considered hitting a home run. It's about time you guys had some good luck.

Update:

Dad finished at 63.75 bu/ac - he told me tonight that he sold it all today @ $5.51! (he said, "it will probably go to $7.00 - but, I am not going to complain" - then he went on the gripe about income taxes - I love it!!)

Highest he has heard is FOF that had a field make 93bu!!! (he hasn't talked to the FOF - just heard through grapevine)

My Dad also planted 40 acres of dryland corn this year - planted some test plots and decided just to go ahead and plant 40 acres - it looks GREAT (I know: a lot can happen between now and harvest). A few weeks ago BEFORE all the big rains hit Perryton - he said he checked his soil profile and had over 4' of water!!!! It is just kind of fun to talk about......

The corn looks OUTSTANDING as well. We have a 1/3 less irrigation cost in it this year as well.

this is good news for the farmers.

my dad was telling me that in the 50's a dry land crop of 15 bushels was a good crop. 5 was normal.
