I was just curious if they still had Hex Day at Canyon HS, or if that fun tradition has been done away with ...

(Perhaps CanyonAg can answer to this)

Hex Day at CHS dated back at least to the '60s, and was (as best I recall) on the Friday before Halloween. The idea was for students to come to school in costume or disguise (preferably handcrafted, witty, zany or outlandish -- sort of like the contestants on the game show Let's Make a Deal!), so as to put a "hex" on the Eagle's football opponent that week. (Did the hex work? In the 60s and 70s, at least, usually not. But that was beside the point ...) I don't recall anyone dressing as witches, ghosts, ghouls or the like, as that would have been considered "kid stuff" and would invite such comments as ("Hey, you forgot your treat bag!" "Don't forget to say 'thank you'", etc.) Likewise, I don't remember anyone in town having religious objections to HD back then ...

My kids were class of 2005 and 2007 at CHS....I don't recall anything like it. I'll see if they know.

And Spurrier was no buddy of then-NC coach Mack Brown, who Steve sarcastically called "Mr. Football", in reference to "Brown's willingness to focus on recruiting and public relations, rather than play-calling and strategy."

Harrumph. Can't say that I'm too surprised. Probably one of these things happened:

1) someone pushed the envelope a little too far with their costume and the administration deep-sixed Hex Day for all time -

2) some local busybody activist with a raging case of samhainophobia made the elimination of Hex Day their personal project -

3) the kids were having too much fun and administration declared that Hex Day activities are a distraction from the ongoing educational mission of our schools, blah blah de blah blah blah, and henceforth will discontinued -

4) any or all of the above.

It was the Captain Underpants affair at Long Beach High School in New York that got me to wondering if they still had HD at CHS ...

Guess I'll continue my inquiry at Classmates.com ...

thanks for checking -
