Figured this might get a (slight) bit more posting traffic over here.

Is the road passable west of Lajitas to Presidio? We've got a biking trip planned this weekend, and I'm afraid we won't be able to do our original plan, which was a 120 miler from our place in Terlingua to Presidio and back. If not, we'll probably have to stay in the park area.

Is that a state highway?

I'd recommend calling the TxDOT area office. They should be able to tell you the condition.

I was working in Presidio in the fall of 1991 when it flooded. The road will impassable for a long time, two to three months. The highway dept will probably repave and patch it like a patchwork quilt.

FM 170 from Presidio to Lajitas Remains Closed

Staff Report
NewsWest 9

PRESIDIO - The water is long gone, so why is one of the main roads between Presidio and Lajitas still closed?

The Texas Department of Transportation says they've been flooded with calls from drivers wondering why FM 170, also called "The River Road," is still shut down.

TXDOT Officials tell NewsWest 9, the recent flooding has torn it up and their crews have been working non-stop to make repairs, and it make take a while.

According to TXDOT, they still have a massive amount of work to do on it.

Thanks very much for the info.

I'm bringing a group of guys down that has never been to the area, so this is a bit of a disappointment. I love riding out there, so we'll be mountain biking behind the ghost town and on parts of the Lajitas trail system. We'll also ride road bikes from Terlingua to the Basin and down to Rio Grande Village and Boquillas Canyon Overlook and back.

it is actually possible to get all the way through on 170 now. the road says locals only because some of it is gravel right now but i know people who have made it through fine.

For a while they were routing people through our place and on into Loma Paloma, at least until the river backed up into Alamito Creek and came over the road.

Headed down this weekend for the first time since the flood....hope it's not too bad.
