You are probably thinking of the Pizza Foundation. It's pretty good.

Interesting story in today's Austin Un-American comparing Marfa to the 'old Austin'...

No wonder my cousin decided to open up a club there. He originally was manager of the Continental Club in Austin and the one in Houston. Now he owns and operates Padre's in Marfa. He absolutely loves the area.

We made it through Marfa, but not at meal time, so didn't eat there. We would have gone to the pizza place, but stopped in Alpine to wait this out:

which I'm posting (or trying to post) partly to show the storm and partly to see if I can post a pic (first try). We ended up eating at Primo's Pizza in Alpine, which we thought was pretty good. It was around 8, and we hadn't had anything to eat since breakfast, so we were hungry, and maybe not unbiased judges, but it did taste good.

Well, crud, that didn't work--someone want to take a look and tell me what I did wrong?

Padre's is a true Texas original, housed in a beautifully renovated 100 yr. old adobe building that was formerly a feed store, carriage shop and funeral home. Padre's is located in the heart of the funky, eclectic and diverse West Texas arts town of Marfa. Padre's features a hardwood dance floor,a fully stocked bar with an extensive beer and tequila selection, an "ice house" style back game room with shuffleboard, pool, pinball, and two vintage jukeboxes, a big screen for cheering on your favorite Texas teams, live music, delicious food, and a comfortable outdoor patio with a fountain and fire pit, perfect for enjoying the great high desert climate. Open Wednesday through Saturday

I lifted this from the Marfa Chamber of Commerce site. My daughter, Zip93, was there a few weeks ago and I have asked her to reply on this thread to give some "first hand" reviews of it.

I missed this place this past spring break with the family, but will definitely add it to the places to visit the next time we get back to Marfa.

I wish them much success.

So Six String, are you moving still thinking about moving out there?

If I could make a living out there I think the family consensus is that we would go.

Again, really liked the "out there" feel and the Big Bend region.

for wildcat

right click on the image and copy the image url. I am sure there is another way with flickr, but that is the quick and dirty way.

Nice pic!

Thanks, Sandy. Yeah, those were all Ft. Davis, Big Bend, Alpine--weekend before last. The 2nd annual father-son weekend trip :-)

Since the board is quiet right now, I'll try one more time to post a picture. Forgive my experimenting.

Dang, it worked. Sandy, you are a pro--thanks for the help.

Nothing professional. Canon EOS Rebel XT, all three of these with the 18-55 mm lens. Shoot a lot of shots, delete the bad ones before anyone sees them--that's my plan so far.

Which town is that in the shot with the looming rain storm?

Alpine, coming in from the south on 118.

I will give it a shot, too. The first picture is a view from one of the trails in Big Bend. They have opened up a lot of new trails since the last time I was there (4 years prior to October 08).

This is a view driving south from Alpine. The road winds up a mountain and off in the valley you can see Alpine. It doesn't show up that well, but it is there.

We love Alpine and have thought about retiring there. The place itself is wonderful. We just have reservations about the distance from medical care - that, and the fact that we're afraid that we would eventually go stir crazy for something to do.

About that last picture...

To the far left in the background you have Twin Peaks. In the middle you see the Hay Stacks. On the right the small point is called Mitre Peak. The picture is taken from 5 Mile Hill.

If Marfa were a viable place to make a living, I'd be there. My Dad's from Alpine and we've got a nice place south of Marfa, but I just can't come up with an idea that would enable me to make a living out there. Maybe I should become an artiste.
rbcs_2

Yes, that is from 118 looking north into Alpine. It has been a long time since I lived out there and the names of things have slipped my mind a little.

Here is another shot of Alpine heading into town on 67.

Here is one of The Window in Big Bend. We got to the park about 5 and decided to hit a trail near the campsite before dark. Of course, we get to the end of the trail right at dark. The result is the picture is dark and doesn't do the actual view justice, but hopefully you can imagine what it might look like.

BTW

What is the temperature out in Marfa/Big Bend now?

wildcat08
How long do you want to ignore this user?
AG
Marfa is 90 degrees and clear at 4 p.m. Forecast for next few days is right in that range.

Forgot to note--heat index was 87 degrees. That's one (of many) differences with Dallas--heat index differential can be a negative instead of a postive.
