How long do you want to ignore this user?
Going to spend about 6 months out there working as a production engineer, then I go back to Dallas...

My wife is coming with me and she's an elementary teacher, I really want her to get a job for the fall there but schools usually only sign year long contracts, anyone got connections/suggestions?

She doesn't mind subbing... where should we look first? Her working is probably more for my and her sanity then for anything else... I can't stand it when she's not working...

Anyways, anybody got any suggestions on things to do? places to hang out? events?

thanks!

Aggie hangouts?

Sorry, that just sounded kind of funny. Have your wife put in an application at the school district. I'm sure she can get all the sub work she wants.

There are quite a few Ags out here. You won't have any problem finding any.

And it's actually a decent time to get a 6-month lease. A year ago you'd have had a tough time finding anything on a 12-month lease, and you could forget about anybody doing a 6-month.

Company is providing housing and furniture, they told me it would be very nice and not to worry about it... Still, i'll believe it when i see it

Have her put in a application in at Midland Classical Academy. The majority of teachers are AGGIES and the majority of students that graduate are going to A & M. Have her look into teaching there.

I second the Midland Classical Academy idea.

I believe I'm going to work for the same company you are and I am from Midland. Since I read this, I have asked around trying to find you a good contact for your wife, but haven't been successful in finding anything. The best contact I would have had moved last year. Have her put an application into MISD and at Midland Classical Academy, but in the mean time, I'll be looking around for you.

To be a sub for MISD you will have to go through a 8 hour orientation and then observe for 6 hours in the classroom. You can get the info from the main office. One thing you might want to note is that ECISD pays their subs about $20/day more. Same process for both. The only reason I know this is that my wife is a certified teacher and is getting back to subbing just so she is not at the house all the time and driving me crazy. Hope this helps and good luck. If you need anything else please email at the address in my profile.

I'm assuming the extra $20 in Odessa is hazard pay?

I'm a graduate of Midland Classical Academy and I'm trying to think about which teachers there were Aggie grads.

I can think of one Aggie, a few Arkansas alums, some Longhorns a few people from Dallas Baptist. I was already gone when they started the elementary school so I'm not sure who all is teaching over there.

Mark Fairchild,

My oldest is starting kindergarten at MCA next year. I was not aware of the A&M ties. Please expound; I would love to find out there is a big Aggie connection.

Thanks

I have two at MCA, the only tudor that I know of from A&M is Travis Voscamp (spelling?). There are several Dallas Baptist University grads and John Brown? (Arkansas).
The 2009 class (about 20) has 7-8 going to A&M this fall. More to follow after one year at Midland College.
MCA has a very good reputation with A&M, obviously top 10% would be 2 students.

Probably the biggest conduit for MCA tutors comes from the T Bar M Camp. Many of the younger tutors (from the upper school) also worked as counselors at the camp. Several of them go back there in the summer to work.
Ron Miller, the Dean of Students, used to run TBarM. The Dunn family, MCA founders, are heavily involved with TBarM also.
