Hey guys I will be moving to the Midland/Odessa area pretty soon to begin working with BJ services. I was just wondering if anyone on here worked for them. I am pretty excited to begin my career. I am also very anxious/ nervous to see what the midland/ odessa area is like. I grew up in Houston, went to school at A&M in College Station. So I have never really been exposed to "small town living".

It ain't Houston. Take some pictures of green things, cause there aren't many out there.

And I can talk smack about MAF as I lived in San Angelo for 37+ years...

How can you have something against our airport when you don't even have one that the majors fiy to?

The country around there is ridiculously ugly, some of the worst looking on the planet. However, the people are absolutely great.

Young'un, We have the same American Eagle y'all do. Now you do have SWA, so you get a point for that.

However, the folks are great, as noted above!

Edit to add- The reason you have the better selection of air carriers is you have all those folks that come and go everytime oil goes up or down... hta

I grew up in Katy 18 years, went to A&M for 4 years, then moved to Albuquerque for 3 then been in Midland for the last 18. (If you haven't guess already, I'm 43, but I know what you are about to go through)

Anyway, Midland/Odessa is very similar terrain to the Katy (grassy plains) look except everything is a few shades more toward brown than green. The only trees you will see outside of residential area is a seas of mesquite tree that resemble large bushes. Midland/Odessa (Metro Area) has 250K people spread out over a 40x20 mile patch. It is different, but we love it here. We say, from here we can go anywhere. If you like clear skys we got that in bunches. If you like windy days we got that too. If you like golf (in the wind and sun) we've got about 5-6 golf courses.

We get hot, but more like a Phoenix heat, very dry. Nothing at all like Houston in August heat. Sometimes you will wonder if it ever rains, until the one day it does and it is a gully washer. We do have seasons - 3 of them - Spring, Summer (5-6 months) and Fall, but we usually see snow more than once a year.

Midland/Odessa people are about as friendly as they get. Great place to raise kids. There are 2 junior colleges and UT of the Permian Basin. There are a handful of nightclubs. Semi-pro baseball in Midland with Football & Hockey in Odessa. Sunsets are prettier here than anything I have ever seen. The restaurants make you think no one know how to cook for themselves. I say our worst Tex-Mex food is better than most's best Tex-Mex.

Start looking for housing immediately.

I have heard the Ads for BJ services, I am not familiar with them personally.

Ask away if you need anything.

I came for a job 21 years ago, leaving the piney woods of East Texas. Am still here! You will miss the trees and lakes, but not the mosquitos and humidity! Enjoy the good whereever you are and Gig 'Em!

Thanks for the responses guys, I am looking forward to the move. Do you guys have any good recommendations for apartments in Midland? I am looking for a 1x1 and am willing to spend 800-900/month

Most of the Apartments along the NW corner of loop 250 are supposed to be pretty good.
The Palms on Briarwood Ave. are the newest apartments behind the Nissan dealership.

I think Vantage of Midland is also a new apartment complex off of Midkiff and Mockingbird Ln. I think this apartment complex was built at or around the time of the Palms.

3200 Bromley Pl. Midland, TX 79705 - 877 215 0104

I don't know anything about them other than they are fairly new.

Welcome to Midland.

Howdy patmiller! Been here, Midland, since 1976 and in the oil business that entire time, so know about BJ. It will be a culture shock, be ready! You may learn to love it; you may not. We bring our engineer recurits out for a summer if they are from Houston to see if they will get used to it.

It is not a bad place, and as stated the folks are great.

okay maybe I should have said an endless view of 6' mesquite trees, and 3' tall weeds and tumbleweeds the size of a Volkswagen.

I moved to Midland/Odessa from College Station a little over a year ago and have enjoyed it. The people are so nice! As for apartments, the Palms and Vantage are the nicest/newest and there is another new complex going up off of the loop. But, I do not know when they will be finished.

Depending on your age, the social life can be sad. Its hard to find stuff to do and people to hang out with.

I just moved out to the Midessa area (~4 months ago) from College Station myself.

I can tell you up front that if you were the type of person that liked to go out to NG thurs-sat and do different "activities" during the week (monday margs, tues karaoke, etc) that you're going to be depressed for a while out here.

However, the people are very nice and its all about how you make it work.

Send me a message sometime if you're bored, I live at the Vantage apartments and I would recommend them if living somewhere nice is important to you.

Thanks a lot for the advice. I will definitely look into the Vantage apartments and I look forward to moving out there. I am pretty sure that the party scene will be something that will take me a while to get used to because I do like to go out a lot and have a good time but with my job and the hours that I will be working I feel like that will consume a lot of my time. I look forward to meeting some fellow Ag's out there. Maybe we can get together and watch some A&M Basketball games.

I live at the Vantage. As apartments go, they're okay.

Welcome to Midland patmiller. You will enjoy beginning your career out this way. I finished last December from TAMU and moved to Midland in June. There is plenty to do out this way, you just have to know where to look. Also you are never more than a nonstop flight away from Dallas/Houston/Albuquerque/Las Vegas/Denver.

The economy in Midland is booming and it is a good time to enter the petroleum industry. You need to check out a few local groups, Young Professionals of Midland, Young Professionals in Energy in Midland, Midland A&M Club. In all of these groups you will find those of a similar age demographic, networking, happy hours etc. Shoot me an email natchamps39 @ hotmail.com, or post yours here, I will send you a few links and other things. Welcome.

Awesome, thanks a lot for the heads up. My email is patmiller1@tamu.edu. I figured with the economy booming and the amount of recent college grads moving out there that it wouldn't be too hard to meet some new people.

I ork for BJ. It has been a pretty good company, just don't know what effect the buyout by Baker Hughes will have on us.

Welcome to Midland, moved here in 89. Grew up in Texas City, went to A&M, moved to Arlington, then Midland. The longer you live here, the more it grows on you. I wouldn't want to live anywhere else now. When you get a little older, married with kids, you will really appreciate Midland.

Pat, if you're going to be moving in a few months, best to get on the waiting list now for most decent apartments.

Midland/Odessa isn't bad. BJ Services has a whole lot going on right now with alot of shake ups and the Buyout with Baker Hughes. My dad worked Western then BJ for close to 30 years. Got tired of the "stuff". Good luck to you. I enjoyed living out there for 5+ years.
