hey guys, i am needing/wanting some help. i am wondering if it safe to travel from big bend from san antonio? me and my girlfriend are planning a two or three day trip there. i pretty much just want to know if it is safe on the hwy while traveling there (hwy 90?) and if it is safe at and around the park. i guess i am mostly talking about the illegals, drug activity, gang related activites. thanks!

Take I-10. Much faster.

A co worker just got back and he said do not go the border of Mexico in the park. He and his wife went and were whistled at by a man on the hill pointing his hand in a direction away from the river. They could hear a walki talki saying in Spanish "They are moving". He then saw a man in the Rio Grande "fishing" with a Childs fishing pole. As they were walking away from the river 2 pickups pulled up on the Mexican side. They said the man on the hill watched them with binoculars for a while. The Rio Grande is only 5 feet across in some areas in the park. They said the Park Ranger was kind of perturbed and said that they did not read the signs that said to stay in the canyons. Also there are pot patches scattered in the park. If you stay in the more traveled areas I think you should be fine

Sounds like we need more of a presence in the area.

Highways should be fine
We went with family and had a great trip
We stayed in Chisos Mtn Lodge and felt very safe but still were "out there".

Stop in at Marfa and Marathon. Well worth it.
