Apparently TPWD doesn't think there is a West Texas:

Good point. I missed that. If they had called that section "the plains" or something like that, then I think that works.

How about this map? West Texas just disappears.

If you are from Odessa, Abilene is not West Texas. If you are from Dallas, Abilene is West Texas.

I grew up there 50's, 60's and 70's. COming out of Dallas on I-20, I always felt like you hit West Texas when you went up Rsnger Hill.

Are you in West Texas checklist:
1.) do you taste the dust from west Texas dust storms in the springtime?
2.) is your area in danger of wildfires/brushfires in the springtime?
3.) is football a major event in your area?
4.) is church a major event in your area?
5.) when a cold front blows in, do people say "I remember the blue norther of 19__ (fill in blank) and don't mention how it never gets that cold in Houston?
6.) are many of the small towns dying in your area?
7.) when the possibility of saving those small towns is mentioned, are microbreweries and boutique coffee shops the last thing anybody really wants.

If you got 6 of 7, chances are you're in west Texas, ergo, west of the 98th

It's got all them

I think that anything 2 hours from fort worth
45 min west of San Antonio
Hour west of Austin
Is west Texas
meridian.
